With colorful layers like ocean waves and tropical fruit flavors, this Blue Lagoon Cocktail is as refreshing as a summer breeze!

Blue Lagoon Cocktail: yellow and aqua layered drink

Blue Lagoon Drink

The Blue Lagoon is a classic cocktail popular at resorts and vacation destinations. With its bright blue color and tropical flavors, it is perfect refreshing cocktail for a day at the beach!

The base recipe is vodka, blue curaçao and lemonade — it’s quick, easy, and bright blue throughout!

We added a little twist to this simple drink recipe to give it a layered look. This ombre effect creates a beautiful drink that changes from yellow to green to bright blue!

Flavor-wise our version of the Blue Lagoon still has that fresh citrus flavor you’d expect, with a hint of sweet pineapple to really give it that tropical vibe.

It’s the perfect drink for cooling off on a hot summer day or for sharing with friends at the pool. Or for imagining you’re at the beach, even if you’re stuck at home! It’s hard to feel grumpy with such a fabulous drink in hand!

Ingredients

For your convenience in re-creating this recipe, I’ve included shop-able ad links to some of the products used. Read our disclosure policy here.

  • 1 oz Vodka
  • 1 oz Lemonade
  • 2 oz Pineapple juice
  • 1 oz Hpnotiq or Blue Curaçao liqueur
  • 1 oz Sprite

Amounts are for one serving. Recipe is intended for readers 21+; please enjoy responsibly!

Our Favorite Bartender Tools

  • Stainless Steel 2-Piece Cocktail Shakers  (This is the style I learned to bartend with and still prefer)
  • Cocktail strainer
  • Cocktail glasses — A highball, margarita glass, mason jar… almost any fun glassware could work for this festive tropical drink!

Instructions

Even though this drink recipe looks fancy, there is actually very little prep time involved! It’s essentially a 2-step recipe, with two layers to make. But it should only take about 5 minutes total time!

1st Layer

Combine the vodka, pineapple juice, and lemonade in a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake to combine, then strain and pour mixture into a tall glass of crushed ice.

2nd Layer

Slowly pour the Hpnotiq or blue curaçao liqueur on top of the drink, so that it mixes as little as possible. (It will blend over time on its own, creating a blue-green ombre look). A little trick I use is to place a spoon curved-side-up against the side of the glass, then I pour on top of the spoon so the top layer trickles slowly and layers on top with less mixing.

Finish with a splash of lemon-lime soda.

Garnish with mint leaves, orange slice, maraschino cherry, or any of your favorite tropical drink companions!

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Hpnotiq?

Hpnotiq is a French liqueur that is infused with exotic fruit flavors. It is bright blue in color which makes it perfect for this recipe!

If you don’t have this on hand, you can substitute with Blue Curacao or Alize berry flavored. Any fruity blue liqueur can work here! Blue curaçao is an orange-flavor liqueur, so it will be a tad different than Hpnotiq, but will blend perfectly too!

Can You Make This Into a Frozen Drink?

Absolutely! Tropical drinks lend themselves well to frozen drink status and are extra refreshing this way! All you’ll need is a blender to make it happen.

To make this a frozen drink, simply triple the ingredient amounts. It doesn’t have to be an exact measurement, as your blender size may vary compared to mine, but just keep the same basic recipe ratio.

Add the first layer ingredients to a blender with ice and mix until smooth and slushy-like. Pour into your glass.

Rinse your blender and add the second layer ingredients (minus the soda) to blender with ice. Pour on top of the first layer.

I leave out the soda when I made a frozen drink because it will bubble up too much when mixing. I just add a bit more juice in its place instead.

TIP: Freeze the juice into ice cubes, so that you can make your frozen drink without watering it down.
