Blue Hawaiian Sunset Cocktail

Taste the islands with this fruity layered drink!

The “Blue Hawaiian” is a popular cocktail recipe that includes rum, blue curaรงao liqueur, sour mix, and pineapple juice. As the name implies, it is a bright blue in color and it is pineapple flavored, with hints of citrus. It’s fun, pretty, and fruity! No wonder it is such a well-loved drink at restaurants and resorts!

We added a twist to this traditional cocktail and made it similar to a tequila sunrise, with a bright orange layer at the bottom. We dubbed our creation the Blue Hawaiian Sunrise and it is every bit as delicious as it looks!

This beachy cocktail will make you feel like you’re on a tropical island and is perfect for those daydreaming of a day in Hawaii. Made with just a few simple ingredients, you can create this amazing tropical summer cocktail for a summer party, barbecue, or pool days! Guests will love it!

Instructions

  1. Combine pineapple rum, pineapple juice, sweet & sour, and grenadine in a cocktail shaker and shake to combine.
  2. Pour this pinkish orange mixture into your cocktail glass, then fill the glass up with ice.
  3. Rinse your cocktail shaker. Now add to it the blue curaรงao and guava juice. Shake to combine, then slowly pour into your glass, on top of the pink layer.
  4. Garnish with pineapple wedge and maraschino cherries. A cocktail umbrella would also look fabulous!

TIP: To keep the layers as separate as possible, I take a large spoon and flip it so the bottom faces up, then press the edge of the spoon against the inside of the glass. I then pour the top layer onto the spoon slowly, so that this blue liquid trickles down and layers easier.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where Can I Find Guava Juice?

Fresh guava juice may be available in your grocer’s refrigerated section. If not, it is more than likely available in the International or Latin foods aisle. It may also be called “Guava Nectar” and could be packaged in a carton or a can. We usually buy Goya Guava Nectar, because it’s usually readily available at our grocery store.

Guava has a sweet flavor, and is a little bit tart. It is a fun mixer for this tropical cocktail because it helps keep things from beingย too sweet!

Can You Use a Different Flavor of Rum?

If you can’t find pineapple rum or want to use what you already have on hand at home, good news! This Blue Hawaiian cocktail tastes fabulous with other types of rum too! Try it with coconut rum or regular silver rum. This drink could also work with vodka, if rum is not your thing.

Can You Make this a Frozen Drink?

Sure! This can easily be converted into a frozen cocktail. It will require two batches of drink mixtures for the layers, just like when we used our cocktail shaker twice. Be sure to rinse the blender between each.

To make a frozen Blue Hawaiian Sunrise, start by blending the grenadine, pineapple rum, and pineapple juice with ice. Pour this into the bottom of your glass.

Wash the blender, then blend up the blue curaรงao and the guava juice with ice. Instead of pouring straight from the blender into your glass, I’d use a large spoon to scoop and layer.

Keep in mind that the ingredients listed above are for one serving, so you’ll need to triple them (just a guess, depending on the size of your blender) to make a pitcher sized amount.
