Broccoli Fireworks Art
What a blast! This easy fireworks art activity for kids uses broccoli as the “paintbrush” to make colorful fireworks that look festive and realistic!
Broccoli Fireworks
Broccoli fireworks paintings are fantastic fun and an easy art activity that kids will love! All you need is some broccoli, paint, and paper, and you’re ready to create your own beautiful firework display!
All you do is dip the broccoli florets in paint and then stamp them onto the paper. You can use different colors of paint to create different effects, and you can even add glitter or other decorations to make your fireworks really sparkle. This is a great way for kids to express their creativity because there is no wrong way to do this craft!
This is a great activity for kids of all ages, even toddlers and preschoolers. The broccoli florets are easy for little hands to hold and the broccoli makes the perfect firework shape!
You could use this technique for any celebrations where you’d have fireworks:
- Memorial Day
- 4th of July / Independence Day
- New Year’s Eve
- Chinese New Year
- Birthdays
Craft Supplies Needed
For your convenience, Iโve included shop-able ad links to supplies used to make this kids flower craft; read our full disclosure policy here.
- Broccoli Florets – These need to be fresh, not frozen. If needed, pat dry with paper towels to remove any excess liquid so it does not dilute the paint.
- Craft Paint – If you’re going to be putting the broccoli in your compost afterwards, you’ll want to use a non-toxic washable paint. Otherwise, acrylic paint works great too! I recommend using multiple different colors to make 3-dimensional looking fireworks.
- Construction Paper – We used black paper so the colorful fireworks really pop on the dark background. It also looks like the night sky!
- Metallic Marker – We used a silver paint marker to write a Fourth of July message, as well as make little action lines or sparkles around the fireworks. Glitter glue could also be used for this step.
Full Instructions
- Dip a broccoli floret into one color of paint. We started with white because it is easier to layer darker colors on top of lighter colors.
- Press the top of the broccoli onto the construction paper, like a stamp.
- Use other colors to make your firework art look 3D.
- Write a holiday message or draw sparkles/action lines on your paper firework crafts. We drew these lines in different directions to create a full firework display.
Remember, our art projects are simply inspiration! Let your creativity lead you!
More Tips
- If you don’t have any broccoli at home, you could get a similar effect using jumbo pom poms.
- Start with just a little paint so you can layer the colors. You can always add more paint!
- Even younger children can likely do this project on their own with a little guidance. I usually show my littlest how I would do something and then let her create her own firework painting. Sometimes they come up with ideas and techniques I didn’t think of, so I simply make suggestions and then let their imagination run wild!
- Stamping crafts can get a little messy because kids often enthusiastically stamp, use a little too much paint, and paint might splatter a bit. I always have my kids wear old clothes and we work on a protected surface that’s easy to clean. It’s worth it though to see them have a lot of fun! PS- We love these silicone art mats for keeping things clean!
