Caramel Moonshine Recipe
You’ve probably seen commercials for flavored “moonshine” on television or seen them in stores. They’re super tasty and super popular right now!
Did you know it’s surprisingly easy to make your own homemade moonshine? It’s cheaper too!
Technically, this is not true “moonshine” because you’re not distilling your own alcohol (that could get you into trouble!) These days when you see something labeled moonshine, it’s usually an infused liquor.
Infused moonshine recipes are so much fun for parties and holidays, because you can incorporate just about any flavor. This Caramel Moonshine recipe is the perfect Fall treat (for grown-ups!)
Ingredients & Supplies
I’ve included affiliate links for your convenience in finding supplies used to make this recipe; disclosure policy available here.
- 4 small mason jars with lids (8-10oz)
- 60 caramel squares (15 for each jar)
- 4 cups vodka* (1 cup per jar)
Note: You can use vodka, Everclear, or your choice of clear liquor for this recipe.
Directions to make caramel infused liquor:
Unwrap caramel candies and place 15 in the bottom of each jar. Fill your jar with vodka until you have about 1/2 inch left to the top.
Shake for 1-2 minutes and store in a cool place for about a week.
When it’s time to open your jars, strain the liquor through a cheesecloth or fine strainer into a large pitcher. Discard any remaining pieces of candy.
Pour your caramel moonshine back into the mason jars, seal, and store in refrigerator until you’re ready to serve.
Prep Tips
- You can infuse your moonshine recipe for up to 2 weeks for more potent caramel flavor. Steeping for longer than 2 weeks is not necessary and could result in bitter taste. I found these hints for infusing alcohol to be helpful.
- Try mixing 2 ounces of your homemade caramel moonshine with cola and serving over ice for a creamy and delicious cocktail.

Is there any way I can preserve these moonshine to last a long time???
It should last for a few months in a cool place.
I used whipped cream vodka.
I shook it every day …
Very creamy..so good
I trying some with hot Tamale candy in with the carmel vodkaa
I bet it does taste fantastic with flavored vodka!
Can caramel sugar-free candies be used?
I thought it was Moonshine but Vodka is good also, as I’ve noticed that most of the recipes of this nature use grain, vodka or Everclear. So with that said I can’t wait to make, and try this because I’m always trying new flavors to make my grain with…but I’m going to use Vanilla Vodka and I think that will hopefully make a good flavor and I think I will try with the candies first and since I just just learned how to make homemade caramel for my popcorn balls for Halloween I will try adding a tiny bit of homemade caramel in a bottle.
And I also have an awesome apple pie moonshine that I’m going to try to add a smidge of the homemade caramel to and have a caramel apple flavor as well!! ? I’m getting thirsty already!!
I cannot wait to try this!
I use grain, vanilla vodka, and whatever else I need for Apple pie shine or orange Julius…so now I have 1, well 2 more I can make caramel and caramel apple
Ty for the cool moonshine recipes will def be trying. The hot one I would serve as shots. Have a wonderful day.
I have used Moonshine and Jolly Rancher Cinnamon makes a great fireball
Vodka is not Moonshine. Both are completely different, especially taste.
You made caramel vodka.
Yes. It would not be legal for me to instruct readers to distill their own moonshine.
I will definitely make this Drink for the Holidays ?????☃️ and other Drinks that I also have the Recipe for them to MAKE ???❤️??♀️
Is there any reason why you couldn’t add apples to the mix as well?
I haven’t tried apples before, but a quick search looks like they take a shorter time to infuse. I think the issue would be that the apples might turn brown and/or mushy and affect the look of the final drink. Not saying it couldn’t work, but I haven’t tried it so can’t say exactly how.
If it turned brown before u took them out put some luster dust in it to make it look sparkle help hide the floating pieces but heck get some green apple liquor and add some for flavor Carmel green apple
Or take out brown ones cut up fresh to add before chilling.
Instead of apples, try using sour apple Jolly Ranchers. They work well, and I’ve been doing it for years. Strain the remaining chunks of candy just like the caramels.
I’m going to have to try that. I wonder how it would be with the cinnamon ones? Thanks for the hint..
Could you use caramel chips instead and how many would you use?
Hi Diane — That might work, I just haven’t tried it so I couldn’t say for sure!
Try weighing the 15 in oz and just use that amount in pieces
I just tried this recipe and followed exactly what it said. My caramels didn’t dissolve and there was no flavor except for Everclear! What could I have done wrong?
I love a good drink… will try this soon
When you say a cool place does that include the fridge or is that too cold?
I don’t think you need to refrigerate it unless you want to do so. The pantry should be fine!
Anyone try making it with Carmel topping instead if wrapped carmels?
Thanks
Have a tub of caramel that you heat up for caramel apples. Will try that. Should be the same and not have to strain for excess candy.
Could this be served as a warm drink?
Did you use soft or hard carmels?
Soft caramels
How long is the shelf life on this drink
It can last for a few months if you have it in a cool place. If it ever looks or smells “off” then toss it and make a new batch.
I have not made it (yet!) but it looks and sounds yummy! Can it be made with sugar-free caramel’s or does a regular versus sugar-free make that much of a difference?
I haven’t tried sugar free, so can’t say for sure. If you do try, let me know how it turns out!
I’m much more of an American whiskey drinker. Any chance that this would work with whiskey?
I haven’t tried it, but I bet it would work! Maybe try it with a cheaper brand to test it out!
I love salted caramel moonshine. Could I add salt to this?
I think it would work best if you used salted caramels!
I used Everclear for this recipe. It’s been sitting for about 4 days and still doesn’t look “creamy”. The caramels are still in the bottom, but have turned to a light tan color. I’ve been shaking it 2-3 times a day to help with the infusion, but it’s still dirty water looking.
What am I doing wrong?
It could potentially be an issue with the caramels themselves, if they are old or too hard and not dissolving.
Just making the Carmel moonshine now but Is it normal for the carmels to solidify at bottom of jar?
Yes, that’s normal. You can give he jar a shake every day to help break them down. There could still be a little bit of candy left at the end of the steeping time, so you can just strain that out.
