Copycat White Castle Sliders

If you’ve ever been to a White Castle, you know the irresistible allure of their sliders. Miniature yet mighty in flavor, these unique burgers have become an iconic symbol of fast food in America. They’re loved by many for their delicious taste, small size, and affordability.

Unfortunately, there are no White Castle locations anywhere close to where I live, so I set out to find a way to recreate this fast-food favorite at home.

Yes, there are White Castle burgers in our freezer section at the grocery store, and we have bought those more than a few times since my 9-year-old is a HUGE fan. They’re pretty good, but the bread doesn’t hold up great after freezing and re-thawing. So I definitely wanted a way to make White Castle sliders at home to get the best flavor.

Well wonder no more…this copycat recipe is pretty much spot-on!! The burgers look, feel, and taste just like the real thing! And they are surprisingly simple to make and get that unique steamed burger flavor and texture.

What Are The Ingredients In White Castle Sliders?

White Castle’s famous sliders are essentially cheeseburger sliders, topped with grilled onions and dill pickles.

These famous little cheeseburgers are described on the company website as “seared and seasoned beef, and topped with savory grilled onions, smoked cheddar and pickles on a signature White Castle bun.” Just typing that out made my mouth start watering!

I’m not usually crazy about burgers from a fast-food restaurant, but White Castle sliders are different because they’re actually steamed, not fried. This makes the meat tender and juicy..never dry! And the onions are cooked perfectly too so you get a subtle flavor that makes these little bite-size creations so tasty.

Ok…enough talking…let’s make them!

Instructions

To Prep: Preheat oven to 350°F.

  1. Heat a skillet over medium heat. Once the pan is hot, add the oil and diced onions and sauté for 3 minutes. Add the water and Worcestershire sauce and reduce to a simmer for 8 minutes. Remove pan from heat and set aside.
  2. Place the ground beef between two sheets of parchment paper and use a rolling pin to flatten the ground beef mixture into a rectangular sheet that is about 1/4″ thick. Remove parchment paper and lightly season with salt and pepper. Cut the beef into 12 square patties and use a wooden spoon handle to poke a few holes in each patty.
  3. Pour the cooked onions and juices onto a baking sheet.
  4. Place the hamburger patties on top of the onions. Cover with another baking sheet turned upside down (this will steam the burgers). Bake at 350°F for 10 minutes.

To Assemble:

When the burgers are done steaming, remove them from the oven. Assemble the sliders with a bottom bun, burger patty with onions, a slice of cheese, 2 dill pickle slices, and your favorite condiments.

Prep Tips

  • Beef – When making burgers, I generally choose ground chuck or something with some fat content. The fat is what helps hold everything together and keeps the burgers moist and juicy. While you can use lean ground beef, the burgers could be a little bit drier and might break apart when you cut them into small patties.
  • Cheese – The White Castle website says that the original sliders are made with smoked cheddar cheese, but I think American cheese slices are very close to what I’ve tasted when I ordered the real thing. If they do use cheddar, you really can’t tell the difference! Plus American cheese is so easy to use and melts perfectly.
  • Onions – Choose either white onions or sweet yellow onions for this recipe. Since the onions are cooked down and then steamed with the burgers, it mellows the onion flavor so it is very pleasant.
  • Condiments – White Castle sliders do not come with condiments on them, unless requested. But you can totally add your favorites, such as ketchup and mustard!
