Kid-Made New Year’s Eve Ball Drop Card
I don’t know about you, but I am ready for 2020 to be over!
I mean, it wasn’t ALL bad…I got to spend a lot of extra time with the kids and since I was home, we did a lot of projects around the house.
However, I think we are probably all ready for a fresh start and a positive year ahead!
If like us, you’re staying in for New Year’s Eve, this is a fun way to celebrate with the kids.
Our kids are still on the young side, so they don’t stay up until midnight. However, we still want to include them in the festivities and find ways to make the night special.
This New Year’s Eve ball drop card is a fun and easy kid’s craft for the occasion! They can make it to use for their own countdown, or as a keepsake to give to family.

How to Make a New Year’s Eve Countdown Craft for Kids
First, watch our quick video tutorial to see exactly how we made our easy New Year’s Eve Ball Drop Card for kids. Then keep reading for full photo step-by-step instructions.
The first thing we did was decorate our ball, so it would have plenty of time to dry.
To decorate, we spread silver glitter glue to cover the entire surface of the paper plate. While the glue was still wet, we sprinkled sequins all over so that when the glue dried the sequins would stick to the plate.
Feel free to customize your New Year’s Eve ball with whatever sparkly supplies you have on hand – this is what we had at home and meant to be an idea starter.
You could also use metallic silver paint, paint markers, loose glitter, plastic jewels, aluminum foil, etc.
While your glitter ball dries, you can work on the rest of the New Year’s card.
Cut a slit in the middle of your black card stock, vertically, leaving about one inch uncut at the top and bottom.
On the top left corner of your card, glue your child’s photo. You may need to trim the photo so that none of it is showing when the glitter ball is on top of it.
Use a metallic paint marker to write a countdown on the right side of your paper, from 10 to 1.
When your glitter ball is dry, glue one end a jumbo craft stick to the back of the paper plate.
Slide the craft stick through the slit in your black card stock, so that the glitter ball is on top of the left side of the card stock, and that the rest of the craft stick is behind the card on the right side.
Now you can slide the New Year’s Eve ball up and down your card, using the craft stick.
Have fun and customize your card with New Year’s messages and any special decorations you like!
What if my kids don’t stay up until midnight?
I feel ya!! With all my kids 12 and under, we don’t like to keep them up past midnight either. But you can still have fun and ring in the new year with a countdown!
If you live outside of the Eastern time zone, you could watch the East Coast countdown at an earlier time. We live on Central time, so our kids watch the countdown at 11pm and go to bed. Then my husband and I can watch the midnight countdown together.
There are also YouTube videos out there with kid-friendly countdowns that you can play anytime and set your own schedule! The kids will love it no matter what time the countdown actually takes place!
