Homemade Yoga Mat Cleaner

I’ve practiced yoga off and on since high school, but about a year ago my husband and I joined a local yoga studio and got serious about it.

I can honestly say that almost-daily yoga has been life-changing for our bodies and minds, but it sure has been rough on our poor yoga mats!

Not gonna lie, after a tough routine, the last thing I feel like doing is cleaning my mat. However, without regular cleaning, your yoga mat will become a breeding ground for bacteria, fungus, and other yucky stuff. (Source)

Believe it or not, most yoga mat manufacturers recommend avoiding soap and water. Many commercial soaps leave behind residues and tear up your mat’s surface over time.

Store-bought yoga mat cleaners work well, but are awfully pricey. Our yoga studio actually makes their own cleaner using essential oils, so I decided to do the same.

Not only does it save quite a bit of money in the long run, but I know exactly what I’m spraying onto my mat.

Plus it smells AMAZING!!

Frequently Asked Questions

How Often Should I Clean My Yoga Mat?

Ideally, a yoga mat should be at least wiped down after each use. This spray is perfect to do so! A light cleaning after each use will not only help keep dirt and germs from building up, but it will also protect your yoga mat from damage caused by grime being ground into it if you don’t clean it.

Can I Use A Plastic Spray Bottle?

It is better to use a glass spray bottle for this formula, as essential oils can seep into plastic over time, lessening the effectiveness of your cleaner.
