One of my most popular blog posts (probably the most popular so far) is about the One Lifestyle Change that Allowed me to be a Stay at Home Mom. When my husband and I decided it would be best for our family at this point in our lives if I were to be home with the girls, we had to make some adjustments to our budget.
However, I wasn’t content to simply save money — I wanted to make money at home too.
Every little bit helps, so I wanted to share some of the things I’ve done or am doing to earn a living, while still being there for my girls during the day. I’ve also included a couple things here that people I know personally have done with great success, because I wanted to be sure to show a variety of ideas.
I didn’t start my blog to make money. I actually laughed when my mom suggested that I look into monetization strategies. “How would people make money with a blog?!” Well, over time I have learned that you can make money blogging, at least enough to help pay some of the bills…and then some!
You won’t make a ton of money right away, and you have to be willing to put in the time and work. But if you enjoy writing and connecting with others online, then this could be a lot of fun and perhaps an income stream down the road.
The first step is to pick a domain name and hosting. I’ve been with Blue Host since the beginning and I love them! Plus they are super affordable. If you sign up through my link you’ll get an exclusive offer just for my fans and get hosting + a free domain for as little as $2.95/month!
Once you’ve got a blog up and running, check out my blogging tips for beginners and how to start making money blogging for some easy ways to start bringing in extra cash with your website and social media.
Is there a particular product or service that you can’t live without? Do you find yourself gushing about it to friends and family and encouraging them to try it too? You should get paid for that right?! Well in many cases, you can!
There are so many ways to become an affiliate, from a huge company like Amazon, to an author that wants help selling their book.
My favorite example is the Ibotta app., which I discovered earlier this year when I posted about our “Couponing Experiment.” A few of my readers encouraged me to check it out, so I signed up and gave it a try. I LOVED it and started telling everyone I knew about how I was getting rebates straight to my PayPal account. Each time one of my friends or family signed up, I got a small referral fee and they got $1 in their Ibotta account.
I only do this for things that I genuinely love and use regularly because when you recommend something, it needs to be authentic or it’s going to come off like a sales pitch. And you don’t want to be “that guy” (or gal!)
Write an Ebook
I’ve wanted to be an author since I was a kid. Growing up, I spent countless hours typing away on my home computer drafting plays, chapter books, and I even drew picture books for my younger siblings. That passion never went away, even though I took a hiatus from writing while I was working full time (sometimes a bad job can drain your creative energy).
However, when I quit my job last year, I decided I was going to finally do it — I was going to write a book! It took almost a full year to figure out exactly what I was called to write about first, but I recently published my first Ebook, “Secrets to a Successful Single Income Budget.”
It’s easier than you would think (well, the technical part, that is!) Thanks to the internet, self-publishing has become easy, affordable, and legitimate! I used the iBooks Author app for Mac: it’s free(!), has plenty of templates to get you started, and publishes to multiple formats.
The best part about writing an ebook is that once it is done, it’s done! You can submit it to Amazon, the iTunes store, or even sell it yourself on your website or social media and it can make money without you having to lift another finger.
Work as a Virtual Assistant
Do you have a knack for social media? Are you experienced in bookkeeping, administrative work, or graphic design? These are just a few of the opportunities to work remotely. Companies both large and small are hiring Virtual Assistants (VA) because they can pay for just the hours of work needed, while the VA gets to work from home on their own schedule. It’s a win-win for both parties! Even some full-time bloggers hire VAs to help with their books or social media tasks!
Make sure you have an active social media presence, set up a website or “home base” where people can check you out and contact you, and consider joining a networking group dedicated to VAs, like the International Virtual Assistants Association.
For a more direct approach, you can also set yourself up on a site like Fiverr, allowing customers to purchase your services a la carte.
Create an Online Store
I don’t personally have an online store (though I did used to have an online Beanie Baby resell business as a kid…seriously, haha!) However, I know a few people who do and I think it is the neatest thing! You could sell your own products in an Etsy shop, anything from printables to crafts to jewelry! Or you could curate and sell products from other sources on your own website: Spoiling Chloe and Ladyfish Boutique are two of my favorites that were founded by regular moms with a dream! How cool is that?
Remember: Give yourself time to grow!
It takes time to build a home-based business that will bring in a full-time income, so in the beginning I worked very hard to trim our family budget while we were living on one income. Secrets to a Successful Single Income Budget shares everything I learned along the way which allowed us to live comfortably on my husband’s income, including the ONE change that saved us over $1000 a month!
What I hope you take away from this is that with a little creativity and some hustle, you CAN bring in a nice chunk of extra cash, all while working from the comfort of your couch! These are just a few of the ways you could get started, and ones that I have tried or personally seen work for someone close to me. Do you have any other ways that you’ve been making money at home?
