Kids Laptop Craft for Back to School

Like many families, back to school season is a different experience for us this year, as we are starting with virtual classes. While there will definitely be some challenges along the way, we are truly excited for this unique experience!

To get ready, we designated half of my office as our homeschool room. We bought a new activity/study table for the kids, created a cozy reading nook, and redecorated the whole space.

Every year the kids and I make a special back to school craft, like this pop-up “About Me” apple card we created a couple years ago as a way for kids to introduce themselves to their new teacher.

This year we decided to commemorate the online learning experience with a laptop photo craft. It was actually my husband’s idea and I just love how it turned out!

I will treasure this keepsake because it will always remind me of the extra time we had together as a family.

Even when things go back to normal, this is still fun back to school craft for kids, who will now be more tech-savvy than ever!

Why Walmart Photo is my Go-To

I’m going to go ahead and make a confession — I like to create, but I don’t always like to plan.

Sometimes when an idea strikes, you want to get started on it right away. There have been so many times I’ve started crafting, only to realize I don’t have any photo prints that are right for what I’m making.

Thank goodness for Walmart Photo!

With 1-Hour photo prints from Walmart Photo, I’m able to upload photos that I snapped on my cell phone to Walmart.com and go pick up my prints in the same day!

Why I love Walmart Photo:

  • Speed —  Get your 4×6 photo prints in about an hour!
  • Convenience — There are thousands of Walmart stores in the United States, so there’s a good chance there’s one near you!
  • Value — Walmart is known for their low prices and the quality is on-point!

In addition to photo prints, Walmart Photo also offers canvas prints, photo cards, and many other projects and gift ideas with same-day service.

Here’s how we made this easy laptop card:

First, make sure you’ve got a 4×6 photo of your child — or a couple so you can have options! We took some photos in our newly decorated “homeschool room” and sent them over to Walmart Photo for same-day prints.

Next we cut a rectangle out of black cardstock that was slightly larger than the photo print and glued the photo on top.

For the card itself, we took a piece of silver cardstock and folded in in half. Then we trimmed the corners so they were rounded, just like a real laptop.

We use a couple small paper accordions to attach the photo to the top of the card. This gives the photo a little bit of a 3D look.

With the photo — or laptop screen — in place, the next step is to make the keyboard. We used our cutting machine to make 29 rounded squares and one rounded rectangle for the space bar. You can also cut the keys out by hand from black cardstock.

We did 3 rows of 9 square keys, and then a 4th row that is the space bar and two square keys on either side.

We used a silver permanent marker to write my daughter’s name and grade on the keys. You could also use white or gold paint markers. Feel free to customize with your own special message!

Isn’t it cute? I’m sure going to treasure this card, just like I treasure this special time with my girls!
