Only 5 Ingredients:
- Yellow Cake Mix (13.25 ounces)
- Large Eggs
- Vegetable Oil (or your favorite baking oil)
- Water
- Chocolate Chips
Helpful Kitchen Tools
- 9×13 Baking Pan
- Large Mixing Bowl
- Silicone Spatula
- Nonstick Cooking Spray
- Stand Mixer (or Electric Hand Mixer)

Instructions
To Prep: Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit and coat a 9×13 inch baking pan with nonstick cooking spray.
- Make the Batter – Add all ingredients except chocolate chips to the bowl of a stand mixer and mix until no big lumps remain.
- Add Chocolate – Fold in 3/4 cup chocolate chips with a spatula, then scoop the batter into your prepared pan and spread to fill the pan evenly.
- Bake – Sprinkle a extra chocolate chips on top and bake for 24 minutes, until golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out almost clean. You don’t’ want them to be 100% finished as they will continue to cook once pulled out of the oven.
- Cool – Remove the pan from the oven and allow the cookie bars rest in the pan for 20-30 minutes before slicing and serving.

Prep Tips:
- Pan Size – For thicker cookie bars, use a smaller pan, such as a 9-inch square baking pan. When baking in a smaller pan, lower the oven temperature to 325°F and bake for a few extra minutes. Check for doneness with a toothpick, and again, you’ll want to take them out of the oven when they are almost done, as they will continue to bake in the pan after you remove it from the oven.
- Chocolate Chips – If you like a lot of chocolate chips, it’s best to add the extras on top rather than mixing extras into the batter. Too many chocolate chips in the batter will make them so gooey that they won’t stay together in a bar (though they will taste amazing!)
- Variations – This is an easy recipe to customize with your favorite flavor of cake mix or mix-ins. Try starting with white cake mix, funfetti cake mix, strawberry cake mix, or even red velvet cake mix. You can use your favorite type of chocolate chips or add a special twist with nuts, sprinkles, peanut butter chips, or candy.
- Cooling Time – Resist the urge to slice these before they’ve had a chance to rest. This allows the cookie bars to finish cooking and set up completely, so they won’t fall apart.
- Storage – Keep in an airtight container at room temperature for 3-5 days.
