Prep Tips

  • Sauces – Our candy cane cheese board is pictured with pepper jelly, which is both sweet and spicy. You’ve got to try our recipe for homemade jalapeño pepper jelly…it’s amazing and surprisingly simple to make! Other dipping sauces and spreads that could work well here: raspberry jam, mustard, or honey.
  • Cheese – Most of the cheese shown on our board is mozzarella balls, both plain, and wrapped in cured meats. I like mozzarella because it is a mild cheese and the white color is perfect for a candy cane themed dish. You could alternatively use white cheddar, goat cheese, or any other type of white cheese that you like.
  • Meats – We used a variety of cured meats for our candy cane snack board, but you are welcome to use your own favorites if you want something different than the options listed in the ingredients. Salami would be another good option.
  • Fruit – We used red raspberries to form the outline of our candy cane. You could use another type of red fruit if you like, such as fresh strawberries, fresh cranberries, or real cherries.
  • Olives – If olives aren’t your thing, you can substitute them with something else. Nuts and dried fruits would be a great option. Almonds, pecans, walnuts, cashews, you name it!
  • Crackers – We didn’t put a lot of crackers on our board, so you could really see the candy cane itself. When serving, I recommend having a plate of more crackers, pretzels, baguette slices, etc. to go with your meats and cheeses.
  • Garnishes – You can add a festive touch to your board with green herbs, such as fresh basil leaves or sprigs of rosemary. I think the rosemary looks a lot like pine needles!

Frequently Asked Questions

How Far In Advance Can You Make A Charcuterie Board?

You can make a charcuterie board up to 24 hours in advance. However, it is best to assemble the board no more than a few hours before serving to ensure that everything remains fresh and flavorful.

Here’s a breakdown of what you can do in advance:

  • 24 hours in advance – Prepare meats and cheeses by slicing and cutting them into the desired shapes and sizes.
  • 4 hours before serving – Assemble the board by arranging the meats, cheeses, fruits, crackers on the board, as shown in the photos above.
  • Immediately before serving – Incorporate fresh ingredients such as herbs, so they don’t have time to wilt. Add garnishes and dipping sauces to the platter.

How Long Can A Charcuterie Board Sit Out At Room Temperature?

Be sure to store the assembled charcuterie board in the refrigerator to maintain its freshness, until you are ready to serve. The completed charcuterie board should not stay out at room temperature for more than 2 hours, due to the perishable ingredients.
