Like a charcuterie board, a butter board is an easy, no cook appetizer recipe that you can put together in about 20 minutes. This is the perfect last-minute or time-saving recipe for the busy holiday season!

Served with artisan bread for dipping, we topped our butter board with festive ingredients that make it a unique addition to your Christmas party spread. It would also make a fabulous New Year’s appetizer!

Creamy butter blends with all the flavors of your toppings when you dip bread into it for a culinary experience that you won’t forget!

What is a Butter Board?

A butter board is exactly what it sounds like — a wooden cutting board schmeared with creamy butter and topped with a variety of goodies such as nuts, fresh herbs, dried fruits, and honey. First spotted on TikTok, butter boards are a fun food trend that is easy to make and customize with your own ingredients. Plus they can be whatever you want them to be: appetizer, light meal for sharing, or even a dessert!

Instructions

  1. Start with a large cutting board (at least 8 to 10 inches wide) and place the softened butter on top. Use the back of a spoon or an offset spatula to spread the butter evenly, to about 1/4 inch thickness. Sprinkle with sea salt.
  2. Add the roasted garlic cloves, minced figs, and fresh herbs, distributing evenly on top of the butter.
  3. Drizzle with honey and sprinkle with orange zest.
  4. Finish your board with dried cranberries and/or pomegranate pearls.

Prep Tips

  • Feel free to customize with your favorite toppings! I think that chopped pecans or pine nuts would be fabulous additions to the mix.
  • If serving for the Christmas, you could spread the butter or mold it into the shape of a Christmas tree, like our Christmas tree charcuterie board.
  • Be sure to serve your butter board with a butter knife and other utensils for scooping and spreading! You could also have a side of jam for guests who like a sweet taste.
  • Want to spice it up? Add a sprinkle of black pepper or chives!

Frequently Asked Questions

What Can I Serve With A Butter Board?

Bread is the traditional accompaniment, but since this isn’t exactly a traditional recipe to begin with, you can get creative with it!

Our favorite breads for dipping:

  • Focaccia
  • Herbed bread
  • French Bread
  • Rustic Bread
  • Whole Wheat Loaf
  • Pita bread
  • Naan

When choosing a bread, look for hearty, sturdy breads with a thick crust. They’ll be great for dipping because they won’t fall apart and can scoop up lots of yummy butter and toppings.

Alternatives to bread:

  • Crackers, such as Triscuits, Wheat Thins, Ritz, Club Crackers
  • Crispy breadsticks (the kind that are long and thin with a consistency like crackers)
  • Crostini

Can You Make A Butter Board Ahead Of Time?

Yes, you can prepare your butter board a day in advance and keep refrigerated until party time. You’ll want to bring the board out to soften at room temperature about 20 minutes before you’re ready to serve.

What Can I Use Instead Of Butter?

Looking for a healthier version of the butter board trend? Try making a hummus board with sliced fresh veggies and pita chips on the side! Top your hummus with olive oil, pine nuts, fresh basil, and lemon zest for a simple, but delicious appetizer.

Another alternative to butter (though perhaps not quite what I would call “healthy” either) is a cream cheese board. Top with your favorite jelly or jam. I love jalapeño pepper jelly on mine!
