Twix Cookies
Buttery cookies, gooey caramel, and rich chocolate – Twix Cookies taste just like your favorite candy bar, but homemade and even better!
Twix Thumbprint Cookies
Everyone has their favorite candy bars, and Twix is one of mine! As I’ve gotten older and wiser, I usually prefer more grown-up treats, but something about Twix candy bars just gets me every time! I always sneak them out of my kids’ Easter baskets or Halloween candy bags…shhh…don’t tell!
What are Twix Made Of?
Twix candy bars are actually more like a cookie bar! That’s because the base is a shortbread cookie or biscuit. The cookie is then covered with a layer of soft, stretchy caramel. Finally, the whole thing is wrapped in creamy milk chocolate.
A standard Twix comes with two cookie bars. Double the deliciousness! It is a simple, classic treat and one of my favorite candy bars!
These Twix cookies are a delicious spin on that candy bar classic – they taste just like the real thing, but maybe even better because they’re homemade!
We started with buttery shortbread cookies, dipped them in melted chocolate, and filled them to the brim with creamy caramel.
Sound good? Thought so! Let’s get baking!

- 3 sticks of Butter – softened
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
- 3 1/2 cups of all purpose flour
- 1/4 teaspoon of salt
- 1 1/2 cup chocolate chips
- 1 jar of caramel topping or 1 cup caramel squares (melted)
Kitchen Supplies Used:
- Cookie sheet
- Wire cooling rack
- Non-stick silicone baking mats
- Medium cookie scooper
- Wire whisk
- Measuring cups and spoons
Instructions
First Make the Dough:
- Cream softened butter and sugar in the bowl of a stand mixer until smooth and fluffy. Add the vanilla and continue mixing.
- In another mixing bowl whisk together flour and salt. Slowly pour your dry ingredients into the bowl of wet ingredients, mixing as you go, until you have a fluffy batter.
- Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and chill dough in refrigerator for 30 minutes.
Bake the Cookies:
- Preheat oven to 350°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a non-stick silicone baking mat.
- Take the cookie dough out of the fridge and roll into Tablespoon size balls, placing them on your prepared pan.
- Gently press down in the center of each cookie with your thumb to make an indentation.
- Bake at 350°F for 15 to 20 minutes, or until the cookies begin to turn a light golden brown around the edges. Remove from the oven and transfer to a wire rack to cool.
Add the Toppings:
- Melt chocolate in the microwave in 20 second intervals, until melted and smooth. Dip the bottom of each cookie in the melted chocolate, and place them chocolate-side-up on a cookie sheet until chocolate is hard.
- Place a teaspoonful of melted caramel in the center of each cookie. You can also use caramel sauce from a jar.
- Scoop remaining melted chocolate into a plastic pastry bag. Cut the tip off the bag and drizzle on top of the caramel layer.
- Allow cookies to cool completely, so the caramel and chocolate sets. Enjoy!
Prep Tips
- Chocolate – We used semi-sweet chocolate chips, but you could also use milk chocolate chips or dark chocolate to switch up the flavor or make use of what you have on hand at home.
- Caramel – We used soft caramel squares and melted them to make the filling for our Twix cookies. (Be sure to remove wrappers before melting and use a microwave-safe bowl). If the caramel is too thick to scoop or pour after melting, you can add a splash of milk or cream to soften and make the caramel more workable. Alternatively, you can use caramel sauce from a jar for the filling as a time-saver.
- Storage – Normally I keep my cookies at room temperature, but these taste amazing when they’re chilled! You can store cookies in an airtight container on the counter (for softer caramel filling) or in the fridge (for a chilled treat).
- Tools – We also love these Non-stick silicone baking mats because cookies pop right off them and you can wash and reuse over and over! A cookie scoop makes it a breeze to portion out even balls of dough.
