DIY Gel Air Fresheners
These homemade gel air fresheners are easy, customizable with your favorite colors and scents, and last for weeks without harsh chemical smells.

DIY Gel Air Fresheners
If you’re looking for a simple way to keep your home smelling fresh, these homemade gel air fresheners are such a fun project to try. They’re easy to make, completely customizable with your favorite colors and fragrances, and they last for weeks. You can match them to the season, your decor, or just whatever scent you’re loving at the moment.
One of my favorite things about making them at home is that you can skip the overpowering perfumes and mystery ingredients that often come with storebought air fresheners. Instead of heavy, chemical-like smells that can be irritating, you get a lighter, more natural fragrance that feels clean and pleasant without being overwhelming.
They’re also great for placing around the house in small spaces like bathrooms, bedrooms, or entryways. Once you make a batch, you’ll see how easy they are to customize and refresh whenever you want a new scent.

Ingredients
- 2 Envelopes of Unflavored Gelatin (0.25 ounces each)
- 1/2 Cup Water (room temperature)
- 1/2 Cup Boiling Water
- 2 Teaspoons Fragrance Oil
- Liquid food coloring
Materials Needed:
- 4-Ounce Mason Jars with Lids
- Mason Jar Frog Lids (optional)

Instructions
- Prep the Gelatin: Add the two packets of gelatin and half cup of room temperature water to a medium mixing bowl. Gently stir, just enough so that the gelatin powder gets wet, and set aside for 5 minutes.
- Make the Base: Pour the half cup boiling water on top of the gelatin and stir until completely dissolved.
- Add Color & Scent: Stir in 2 teaspoons of your favorite fragrance oil and 1-3 drops of food coloring.
- Finish & Set: Divide the gelatin mixture evenly among the three mason jars and allow to sit overnight.

Prep Tips:
- Yield – This recipe makes three 4oz jars. They should last for about 3 weeks.
- Food Coloring – Do not use gel food dye, it doesn’t fully mix and leaves clumps of color. I used 3 drops of liquid food dye and the air freshener gel ended up pretty dark. Depending on your preferences, 1 drop is great for lighter colors, and 3 drops is best for a bit darker.Â
- Clean-up – When you notice that the air fresheners no longer have any scent, you can wash out any remaining gel with dish soap and water.
