Free Insect Scavenger Hunt
With this backyard bug scavenger hunt, kids will learn more about beneficial insects, get outdoors, and get active! Sponsored by Nature’s Bakery.
There’s nothing wrong with a little screen time, but one of my goals is to have my kids do something active outside every day. Fresh air is good for the soul, plus staying active is so important!
Between raising three kids and running a small business, I don’t always a lot of extra time to plan out elaborate activities. Lucky for me (and other busy parents), Nature’s Bakery created an activity generator filled with Snack Sized Adventures, AKA creative screen-free activities for kids!
There are both indoor and outdoor activities, so there’s always something to do, no matter the weather! Check it out here: What on Earth Should I do with my Kids?!
The first activity we found was a backyard scavenger hunt. My kids LOVE scavenger hunts! You can create your own or use the free printable available here.
We had so much fun with the backyard scavenger hunt, that it inspired us to create our own! We made it specifically a “bug hunt” — goodness knows we have plenty of creepy crawlies living out in the country!
Bug Hunt for Kids
We created this free bug hunt printable so we could keep track of all the different insects we found around our property. Click here to grab your own copy of our printable bug scavenger hunt!
We tried to think of insects that are common in most areas of the United States, but there is room on the sheet to add more if you like.
For example, while we were outside on our bug treasure hunt, my oldest daughter saw a love bug and suggested that we add it to our list! I love how it got them to think of their own ideas too!
The best part about this activity is that it is low prep — all you have to do is print out the worksheet and go!

Why Kids Should Learn About Insects
Admittedly, my girls are not huge fans of bugs. But they are unavoidable in life, especially living where we do outside the city, close to the woods.
Plus, not all bugs are bad! Many of them are extremely helpful because they help control the population of other insects, pollinate flowers and gardens, and even make things we can eat like honey.
There are many reasons why it’s important for kids to learn about insects including:
- Become less afraid of them
- Learn which insects to avoid
- Grow an appreciation for beneficial insects
A insect hunt is the perfect way to have fun and get to know more about our backyard bugs and why we need them in our lives!
Don’t Forget the Snacks!
Bug hunting sure works up an appetite, so we always make sure to have wholesome snacks on hand.
A comfy blanket, something yummy to eat, and water to hydrate — it doesn’t get any better (or easier) than that!
We love Nature’s Bakery snacks, especially their Gluten-Free Fig Bars because they’re made with whole grains and real fruit. Even better than what’s inside Nature’s Bakery snacks is what’s not inside…these plant based treats are dairy free, nut free, and GMO free!
Plus they come in four delicious flavors: Original Fig, Pomegranate, Raspberry, and Blueberry, so there’s something for everyone!
Another plus to Nature’s Bakery Gluten Free Fig Bars is that they don’t melt or crumble, which is crucial during hot Texas summers! They’re the perfect on-the-go snack!
