DIY Sidewalk Chalk Paint

If you’re looking for a fun and easy outdoor art activity for the kids, I’ve got a really cool new low-prep idea for you! Get ready to ditch the traditional chalk and whip up some brilliant, liquid Sidewalk Chalk Paint using just three simple kitchen ingredients.

The girls love to create artwork on our driveway when the weather is nice. However, I can’t stand the feel of regular sidewalk chalk. It gives me the shivers just thinking about it! So I set out to create a “sidewalk chalk” that you can paint with a paintbrush – no weird sensory effects! In fact, there’s no real chalk in this recipe at all!

This homemade sidewalk paint promises hours of bright, colorful artwork on any pavement surface, and the best part? It washes away with the hose, making cleanup a breeze!

Prep Tips

  • Storage – You can keep any unused paints in an airtight container for a couple days. As the paints sit, they may start to separate over time. All you have to do is stir them up until the color looks smooth and even.
  • Food Coloring – We used plant based food coloring so it would be easier to wash away, but you can use any food coloring that you have on hand.
  • Clean Up – This homemade chalk paint washes away easily when you spray with a garden hose on the same day that you painted. If you let the paint sit overnight, it will take a little more time to clean with the hose, but it will wash away in the next big rain. So if you like your artwork, you can leave it as long as you want, as it does not permanently stain.
