During pregnancy, many women notice that their hair seems thicker. Contrary to popular belief, this isn’t because the body produces more hair during pregnancy, but rather that very little hair is shed during pregnancy.

Hormonal charges during pregnancy essentially cause the body to cling to hair, and since less is falling out, the hair is indeed fuller.

The problem is, after the baby is born, hormones change again. Now the hair begins to shed again, and lots of it!

Excessive hair loss is known as telogen effluvium and is caused by a variety of factors:

2. Choose Hairstyles that Hide Postpartum Hair Loss

Since postpartum hair loss happens to a certain degree whether we like it or not, one strategy is to hide it!

Because my hair is naturally wavy, I can wear it curly or straight, depending on the products I use. However, I find that curly hair actually makes the short “baby hairs” around my face stick out more!

It takes a little extra time to straighten my hair, but doing so actually covers up short fly-aways, as well as smooths them down more.

3. Protect Hair from Further Damage

  1. I went through pretty devastsating postpartum hair loss my first pregnancy. My doctor seemed unbothered by it when i brought it up , suggesting i cut my hair and just wait it out. I went down the google rabbit hole looking for anything that would help. When i got pregnant for the second time I was actually really nervous because i didn’t want to go through losing my hair again. I ended up finding a postnatal hair vitamin that really helped called Baby Blues (babyblues.care) I use that even now when my son is two years old. Basically replenishes the nutrients lost after childbirth. I also tend to take my lightstim (Red light therapy) i use on my face at night when catching up on netflix and run it over my scalp. Not enough time has passed to really say if that works but i’ve been reading alot on red light therapy as well. Hope this helps any Mom! I know how devastating the hair loss can be.

  2. I second the baby blues vitamins! My ob said 50% of new moms start deficient which is something my first doctor never told me and may have helped as far as hair and mood too.

    Moms are amazing and its crazy we don’t get more info about this tbh.
