What is a Prescription Savings Card? – Our SingleCare Review

Self Care for Moms

One of the biggest expenses for families is health care — there’s just no getting around the fact that things happen.

As a self-employed blogger, health insurance can be a bit tricky. There are not many affordable plans available, and those that are within the budget often have a ridiculously high deductible or minimal benefits.

I love being my own boss, but I do NOT love the health insurance situation.

Unfortunately, there are a lot of people who can probably relate, probably even some of you that are reading this.

According to U.S. Census data, in 2018 there were 27.5 million people in the United States without health insurance.

However, a 2019 report by the Commonwealth Fund (a New York-based think tank) found that there are also over 44 million Americans that are considered underinsured, which means that they have high out-of-pocket costs, limited benefits, or both.

One of the benefits that isn’t always offered on low-tier insurance plans is prescription drug coverage. And if you’ve filled a prescription recently, you know that some of them are quite pricey. It’s so frustrating!

That’s where a prescription savings card can make a BIG difference.

I wish I’d found out about this sooner, because with two kids bringing home crud from school all winter long, we’ve had to fill a few prescriptions already!

What is a Prescription Discount Card?

Also called a prescription savings card, a prescription discount card is way to save on out-of-pocket costs at the pharmacy.

One of the most trusted options is SingleCare — a prescription savings card that can help you save up to 80% at the pharmacy.

SingleCare is different than other prescription discount cards because SingleCare partners directly with pharmacies. There’s no “middleman” with SingleCare, so they can pass on the savings to YOU!

How Does SingleCare Work?

First, download the SingleCare app — it’s available free in the App Store or Google Play. I recommend doing this before you need a prescription or refill, just in case. That way your SingleCare card is ready to go when you need it.

When it’s time to fill a prescription, you’ll use the SingleCare app to search for that specific prescription drug by location. SingleCare compares prices at nearby pharmacies, so you’ll know where to go to get the lowest cost.

TIP: Fellow blogger The Consumer Queen uses her SingleCare card to get free or discounted flu shots!

At the pharmacy, present your SingleCare card to the pharmacist and ask them to process your prescription or refill using the BIN and PCN number found on your card.

You can print a copy of your card, request a card to be mailed to you, or use the card located inside the app itself. I love that your card is available in the SingleCare app because there is no waiting required – it’s ready to go right away!

How Much Does SingleCare Cost?

There is NO cost to use your SingleCare card. Yep, you read that right —  it’s free!

SingleCare makes a small fee from its pharmacy partners when you refill a prescription with your SingleCare card.  That’s how they keep the service free for you!

It’s kind of like how we bloggers sometimes share discounts on products we love with our readers. Win-win!

Can You Use a SingleCare Card if You Already Have Insurance?

Even if you have health insurance coverage, you can still download and use the SingleCare app and prescription discount card.

What you can’t do is combine your health insurance rate with the card discount.

However, having a SingleCare card gives you the option to compare prices between what your health insurance offers and the SingleCare price. Then you get to use whichever is the lowest cost!

Is SingleCare Legit?

This was always my hesitation with prescription discount cards. I remember my dad gave me one a while back and I never used it — I had no idea what a prescription savings card was or if it was even a legit thing. (Hint: it is totally legit! Click here to learn more!)

There’s no telling how much money I left on the table by not using a prescription savings card. Doh!!

Don’t make the same mistake I did! Download the SingleCare app today and start saving right away!
