Cupcake Ingredients
- 1 box white cake mix
- 3 eggs
- 1/3 cup vegetable oil
- Green food coloring (optional)
Frosting Ingredients
- 1 cup unsalted butter, room temperature
- 4 cups powdered sugar
- 1/4 cup heavy cream or milk
- Green food coloring
Decorations
Helpful Kitchen Equipment
- (2) 12-count cupcake tins
- 24 Christmas cupcake liners
- Mixing bowl
- Piping bag with star tip
Instructions
To Prep: Preheat oven to 350°F and line two muffin pans with cupcake liners.
- Prepare the cupcake batter according directions on the box.
- Stir green food coloring into the batter until it is a bright green color.
- Pour batter into prepared pan, filling the cups no more than 2/3 of the way full.
- Bake at 350 for 15-18 minutes until a toothpick comes out clean. Allow cupcakes to cool completely.
Frosting Directions
- Add softened butter to the bowl of a stand mixer or large bowl with an electric hand mixer and cream until smooth.
- Add the powdered sugar one cup at a time and mix until well incorporated.
- Add a splash of milk or heavy cream as needed until you have a smooth frosting that can hold a peak.
- Add a few drops of green food coloring and mix until the frosting is bright green.
To Decorate
- Scoop the frosting into a piping bag with a star tip.
- Arrange the cupcakes in a wreath shape – to do so, we made an outer circle and an inner circle. The outer circle should have 15 cupcakes, and the inner circle will have 9 cupcakes.
- Pipe icing onto the cupcakes in a criss-cross fashion to give the appearance of a wreath texture. It doesn’t have to look perfectly symmetrical, as pine boughs in nature wouldn’t be exactly the same, so don’t stress too much about it!
- Top with holiday sprinkles and a bow made with Twizzlers candy.
Prep Tips
- Frosting – We made one big batch of icing because if you make multiple batches, it can be tricky to get the color to match up just right. I recommend starting slow with the frosting, taking care to make sure that you will have enough to cover all the cupcakes with one batch.
- Cupcake Placement – If your cupcakes start to shift on the serving platter, you can add a small amount of icing to the bottom of each cupcake, like “glue” to hold them in place.
- Red Bow – We use large Twizzlers to form our wreath’s bow, however, you could also make a fondant bow with red fondant, or arrange red candies or berries in the shape of a bow. There are a lot of ways to get creative with what you might already have on hand at home.
- Green Coloring – We used a bright green color for our frosting. However, you could alternatively use a darker, forest green color for a different look. Both would be beautiful!
