How Long Does it Take to Make Hot Cocoa in a Crockpot?

The overall cook time is about an hour and a half, so you’ll want to plan ahead when making this recipe.

But the awesome part is that once you make the hot chocolate, it can stay warm in the slow cooker pretty much all day! You don’t need to worry about making a new batch or heating it back up if it gets cold.

You’ll always have hot cocoa ready and waiting when you need to warm up!

How to Make Peanut Butter Hot Chocolate in the Slow Cooker

A free printable copy of the full recipe is below the prep tips.

Add 4 cups milk, the heavy cream, and sweetened condensed milk to your crockpot and give it a good stir. Turn the slow cooker on to the high setting.

Add a generous cup peanut butter and the milk chocolate chips; whisk until everything is melted and smooth.

Put the lid on the crockpot and switch to low heat. Stir every half hour.

When ready to serve, add the vanilla and whisk everything until well mixed again. (Some separation is normal while cooking, so you want to make sure that everything is incorporated before serving).

Note: The vanilla is optional, but I find that a teaspoon vanilla extract really brings out the peanut butter flavor!

Use a ladle to scoop into mugs and garnish with whipped cream and peanut butter cups, or anything else that strikes your fancy!

Frequently Asked Questions

How Long Can You Keep Hot Chocolate in the Slow Cooker?

The best part about making hot chocolate in the slow cooker is that it stays ready and warm for hours! Simply switch the slow cooker from “low” to “warm” once the cocoa is done cooking.

The hot chocolate can stay in the slow cooker on the keep warm setting for 5 hours, or until it’s gone.

How to Store Leftovers

Any leftover hot chocolate can be kept in the refrigerator and reheated later. Pour into a sealed storage container and keep in the fridge for up to 3-4 days.

To reheat, pour the cocoa into saucepan on the stove or back into the slow cooker on low (switch to “keep warm” setting once the chocolate is heated throughout). I don’t recommend reheating more than once.

Can You Make this Recipe on the Stovetop?

Ok, so you found this recipe. You LOVE peanut butter and really want to try it.

But you don’t have a slow cooker!

Don’t worry, all is not lost! You can still make this recipe on the stove top…so grab a large saucepan!

Here’s how:

  • Combine both milks and heavy cream in your saucepan over medium heat.
  • Add the peanut butter and chocolate chips and stir frequently until smooth.
  • Reduce heat and simmer for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.

While the hot chocolate will cook faster this way, it does not stay warm like it does in the slow cooker, so that is the trade-off. But it still tastes fab!
