Mini Monte Cristo Sandwich
All the flavor of the original packed into the perfect handheld bite (plus a surprising secret ingredient!) — our Mini Monte Cristo Sandwich is a must-try party appetizer! Sponsored by Curly’s BBQ.
Mini Monte Cristo Sandwich
My husband is a sandwich master (he used to make them for a living on his Cuban food truck!) His favorite sandwich of all time is the Monte Cristo — or “meat donut” as he calls it. However, if you see them in a restaurant, they’re usually HUGE and way more than one person can eat!
That’s why decided to make our own Mini Monte Cristo Sandwich to enjoy at home. (Why didn’t we think of this sooner?!)
Our Mini Monte Cristo Sandwiches pack all the flavor of the original into an amazing hand-held package. They’re perfect for lunch at home or you can make a batch and slice them up for your Memorial Day cookout!
Because cookouts and barbecue go hand-in-hand, we swapped out the usual deli ham for Curly’s Pulled Pork BBQ — all I can say is WOW!! The barbecue adds a whole new level of flavor! (We also used Curly’s pulled pork to make BBQ Stuffed Avocados so be sure to check those out too!)
We served our Mini Monte Cristo Sandwiches with a homemade Strawberry Habanero Jam, which adds a little kick to balance out the sweetness.
I might never go back to the “original” version and once you’ve tried a Barbecue Monte Cristo you might not either!

Build your Monte Cristo Sandwiches:
Slice Hawaiian buns in half.
Layer each sandwich with 1 slice deli turkey, 1 slice Swiss cheese, and 2 heaping Tablespoons of Curly’s Pulled Pork.
Place the top bun on top of your sandwiches, and gently press the edges to “seal” contents of sandwich.
We swapped out the usual deli ham component with Curly’s Pulled Pork for an extra kick of flavor. Talk about an upgrade!
You can find Curly’s BBQ products in the refrigerated meat section of your local grocer. They’re pre-cooked so all you have to do is heat and serve!
To Cook Your Monte Cristo Sandwiches:
Heat 3 cups of vegetable oil in a dutch oven or your favorite pot for frying. While oil heats, prepare your funnel cake batter according to directions on package. (Or click here to try our gluten free funnel cake batter!)
When oil is ready, pick up a sandwich with tongs and dip into funnel cake batter. Turn until sandwich is fully coated in batter, then gently place in oil.
Fry for 2-3 minutes until the outside of sandwich is a light golden brown. Remove from oil and set on a paper towel-lined plate to cool.
Enjoy whole or slice and serve on a platter as an appetizer.
To Make the Strawberry Habanero Jam:
Combine strawberry jam, fresh strawberries, orange bell pepper, and habanero pepper in a food processor or blender. Chop until all ingredients are well incorporated and sauce is a smooth consistency with no large chunks.
