BBQ Pork Taquitos Recipe

My husband grew up eating Mexican food, so cooking the recipes he enjoyed as a child is second nature to him — Spanish rice, tacos, migas, and flautas. Mmmm…flautas.

Those crispy-fried rolls of meat goodness are a favorite in our house. I’ve never seen my girls eat with so much enthusiasm as when my husband makes flautas!!

You might know flautas by another name — taquitos. Traditionally, there are subtle differences between the two, but these days you can safely use the names flautas and taquitos interchangeably.

Whatever you call them, flautas/taquitos are pretty much the best thing ever! This recipe is awesome because it adds a unique flavor twist, only requires 2 ingredients, and feeds a family fast! (Trust me, there will be no leftovers!)

BBQ Pork Taquitos (Flautas) Ingredients

  • 2 packages Curly’s BBQ Baby Back Ribs
  • 2 dozen Corn tortillas

(makes 20-24 taquitos)

We used Curly’s BBQ Baby Back Ribs because they are pre-cooked, so you save tons of time! (Because who wants to wait all day for ribs to slow-cook in the oven?!) Find Curly’s BBQ products in the refrigerated meat case of your local grocer.

How to make pork flautas:

Remove the baby back rib meat from the bones and tear into small, bite-sized pieces.

Tip: You can make this part even easier by heating ribs in the oven for meat that falls right off the bone. Simply follow the heating instructions on the back of the Curly’s BBQ ribs package.

Place rib meat in the center of tortilla and roll tortilla up so the meat is tucked safely in the middle. Insert a toothpick to hold tortilla together during cooking.

Tip: Steam tortillas in microwave for about 10 seconds to soften. This will prevent them from tearing while you roll your flautas.

Fill a large dutch oven or frying pan with enough cooking oil to almost cover your flautas (about 1-2 inches) and allow to come to frying temperature over medium heat.

When oil is ready, place about 3-4 taquitos in the pan, leaving space between each one. Cook for 3-5 minutes on each side. Remove from pan and place on a paper towel-lined plate to dry.

Repeat until all taquitos are cooked. Remove toothpicks before serving.

Avocado Crema Recipe:

Flautas and taquitos are usually served with a salsa and/or a simple dipping sauce. We love this avocado crema because it is a cool, refreshing contrast to hot sauces!

Place the following ingredients in a food processor:

  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 1 avocado
  • juice of one lime
  • salt & pepper, pinch

Blend until smooth. Keep refrigerated until ready to use.
