Easy Piñata Cupcakes Recipe
We always make homemade desserts for birthday parties, mainly because you save so much money doing it yourself!
This year for all of our birthday parties, we made cupcakes instead of a big cake. And you know what? The cupcakes were a smash hit! Kids love having their very own personal dessert.
The best part for parents is that there’s virtually no cleanup, and you don’t need any dishes or silverware to serve cupcakes!
So what’s even better than regular cupcakes? Piñata cupcakes stuffed full of candy!!
We decorated these piñata cupcakes to match our “My Little Pony™” party theme. Look at this adorable My Little Pony™ birthday card from Hallmark that we found at Walgreens. It came with a light-up keychain that plays the My Little Pony™ theme music, so it is obviously a huge hit too!
Usually kids open cards and kind of toss ’em to the side to get to the presents. However Hallmark has lots of new birthday cards featuring kids’ favorite Disney, Mattel, and Hasbro characters that are like presents themselves — with lights, sounds, and even detachable toys, like princess crowns!
So grab a magical Hallmark birthday card, whip up a batch of these fantastic surprise Piñata Cupcakes, and watch as your birthday star’s face lights up!
Candy-Filled Piñata Cupcakes Ingredients
- 12 white cupcakes
- 1 can white frosting
- 1 bag candy (your choice)
- 1/2 cup shredded coconut
- Gel food coloring (your choice)
How to make piñata cupcakes
Bake a dozen cupcakes and allow to cool completely. (We used a box cake mix to save time). Remove cupcakes from pan, but leave cupcakes in their paper liners.
Carefully cut a hole in the center of the cupcake, leaving about 1/2″ of cupcake on all sides and at the bottom. Remove this cylinder-shaped piece of cake and set aside. (Don’t toss them!)
Fill your cupcakes with candy. We used M&Ms but you could use anything small that would fit into your cupcake.
Remember the pieces of cake you cut out of the middle? Cut those in half, keeping the top half. (You can toss the bottom half now).
Use the top piece of cupcake, your “stopper” piece, to cover the candy-filled hole. Frost the top of your cupcake.
We coated our piñata cupcakes in shredded coconut to resemble the fluttering tissue paper that’s used to make the real thing.
Serve and enjoy the smiles and excitement when kids discover the surprise inside!
