- If you don’t have heart shaped sprinkles, you can use other types of Valentine sprinkles, mini marshmallows, or a drizzle of strawberry syrup for garnish.
- Instead of white chocolate chips and food coloring, you can substitute pink candy melts. You can use one bag of pink candy melts (usually around 12oz) and a teaspoon of vanilla extract to get a similar flavor and color.
- To make a fun Valentine’s Day spread, you could serve your cocoa with pink wafers or fresh strawberries.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can You Make This Recipe In The Microwave?
If you want an alternative to the stovetop method, you can prepare this recipe using a microwave, a microwave safe measuring cup, and a heat-safe bowl.
Microwave Directions:
- Add white chocolate chips to a large heat-safe bowl.
- Pour milk into a microwave-safe measuring cup and heat in 20 second intervals, until steaming. Safety Note: Use caution when removing from the microwave because the container may become hot or the hot milk could splash.
- Pour the warm milk on top of the white chocolate chips and allow to sit for a minute, then stir until the chocolate melts.
- Stir in the sweetened condensed milk and pink food coloring.
TIP: If using the microwave, I recommend making the hot chocolate in smaller batches so it is easier to heat and handle.
Can You Make This Pink Hot Chocolate Dairy Free?
Yes, you can make a dairy free version of this recipe with a few simple ingredient swaps:
- Use your favorite plant-based milk instead of regular milk. I love oat milk and cashew milk for their creaminess.
- Look for vegan white chocolate chips, or check the ingredients to find a brand that is labeled non-dairy or dairy free.
- Use sweetened coconut condensed milk instead of regular sweetened condensed milk.
- Top with a dairy free whipped cream.
Most large grocery stores have a pretty decent dairy free selection these days, so most of these substitutions should be available if you look.
Can You Make This Recipe With Hot Cocoa Mix?
A regular milk chocolate or dark chocolate powdered cocoa mix probably wouldn’t work because the brown color would overpower any pink coloring added. However, you could start with a white chocolate cocoa powder mix as your base and add the milk and food coloring to make a pink hot cocoa.
