When it comes to laundry, I like to keep things simple. Mostly because I can think of hundreds of other things I’d rather be doing!
I see spray starch in the laundry aisle, and I’ve always wondered — what does it actually do? Is there a reason I would add spray starch to my laundry routine?
I did a little research and at-home testing and it turns out that spray starch solves a lot of my pet peeves…like cuffed jeans that won’t stay cuffed after you wash them.
Keep reading for 10 home and laundry hacks using spray starch that will make you life so much easier. Who knew?!
10 Genius Spray Starch Hacks that Solve Real-life Problems
These are a few of the ways I use spray starch to solve some of my biggest pet peeves:
1. Keeps wrinkles out of clothes longer
I think this is the one use for spray starch that I already expected. What surprised me is the science behind why spray starch keeps wrinkles out of clothes.
Starch is a plant-based compound that forms a paste when mixed with water. A spray bottle allows you to apply a light coating of starch to clothing, so that it appears clear. As the liquid starch dries, it hardens, so it holds any natural fibers in place along with it. This is why starch clothes stay smooth and wrinkle-free.
Note: Most man-made fibers (like polyester) are already wrinkle-resistant and don’t require starch.
2. Makes ironing faster
Now this is what I’m talking about! I like ironing even less than I like doing laundry, but some things need it. So any product that reduces the time it takes to iron, as well as makes it more effective, is a definite winner in my book!
How does it work? According to NiagaraStarch.com, “starch contains ironing aids that help the iron glide faster and ‘sets’ the fabric so you don’t have to iron over the same area as many times.”
3. Prevents food stains on table linens
There’s no point in owning gorgeous holiday table linens if you don’t use them! However, there’s always the worry that they could be marked by kid messes, wine spills, etc.
Spraying your linens with starch before setting the table creates a protective barrier that prevents food and drink stains from setting right away. This gives you the chance to clean up a spill before it does permanent damage.

4. Helps repel stains on kids clothes
How did I not know this?! With a three year old who drops things on her shirt all day long, I’ll be using this laundry hack on all her light-colored shirts!
5. Keeps cuffs in place
Pet peeve alert: I am so frustrated by cuffed jeans or shorts that lose their cuff after you wash them! Even when I iron them, I find that they don’t stay in place. It ruins the whole look!
Then I discovered the missing piece — spray starch. A quick mist on my favorite cuffed shorts, then a sweep of the iron, and they look like they did when I bought them!
6. Works as a temporary adhesive
Use spray starch as a temporary adhesive for fabrics. Some ways this could come in handy:
- Create a photo “booth” at your next party using a wall and a bed sheet
- Temporary wallpaper to create an accent wall in a small space
- Cover the back of a bookshelf or build-in for a pop of color or pattern

7. Gets creases out of new curtains
Have you ever bought new curtains and had to wait for days (or even weeks) for the wrinkles to “fall out” as they hang? Spraying your new curtains with starch and ironing first gets those deep-set creases out right away!
Bonus — The starch also helps keep dirt and dust from sticking to your curtains, meaning you’ll need to clean them less often!
8. Protect shoes and keep them looking clean longer
I’ve always wondered why anyone would sell white shoes for kids (my MIL and I actually had this discussion at the outlet mall last weekend), but now I know the secret!
Spray a light coat of spray starch over canvas sneakers to help keep dirt from setting in. It will also make cleaning your shoes easier!
9. Cloth napkin folding
Have you ever tried to fold cloth napkins in a fancy design for a party, but they were so soft that they ended up flopping over and losing their shape? Apply spray starch to your cloth napkins first, and they’ll have the strength to keep their shape!
10. Makes sewing projects easier
Starching fabrics makes them easier to cut because they hold their shape. Starch also makes it a breeze to line up fabrics so you can sew them together.

Great article. Good tips I really appreciate. I just have one question however. I have been thinking of using spray starch on face masks to prevent covid 19 infections. Is it safe to use on masks, and is it safe to breathe it in after dried? Any insights, I’d be grateful.
Hi Silvia – I haven’t read anything that says spray starch prevents viruses from passing through a mask. I wouldn’t recommend doing that because you’d be breathing those chemicals and that’s probably not good for you. If you can’t find an N95 mask and want to make your cloth mask more effective – you can buy the high-end air filers from Home Depot, Lowes, etc. and cut them to fit inside your mask. Look for the filters labeled to capture viruses. It won’t be perfect protection, but hopefully better than just a cloth mask itself. My husband and I made some like this as a backup for our N95 masks, just in case we needed them. Keep in mind it may make it feel a little harder to breathe, just like a thicker mask. Hope this helps! (I’m not a medical professional of course, but these are just things we’ve done in our home).
I love these spray starch hacks! They’ve saved me so much time and hassle!
