Blueberry Baby Trail Mix
This blueberry flavored baby trail mix is a nutritious and flavorful snack that you can prepare in minutes with just 3 ingredients!
DIY Baby Snack Mix
Looking for a healthy sweet treat to make for your child? Our Baby Trail Mix can be made in minutes, with no fuss and no mess! All you need are 3 simple ingredients and a measuring cup!
When my girls were babies, they absolutely loved Cheerios and yogurt melts! We went through boxes and boxes of Cheerios (still do!) and at least a can of yogurt melts a week. The older kids loved to share with their baby sister too!
Since my kids still love all those little snacks, I thought, why not mix them together and create the ultimate kids snack?! With the addition of freeze-dried blueberries (one of my girls’ favorite fruits), you get healthy antioxidants in the mix too!
With only 3 ingredients and no cooking or baking needed, this baby snack mix is about the easiest thing you’ll ever make! One of the great things about this snack mix is that anyone can enjoy it, not just babies! It’s the perfect grab-n-go snack for toddlers, big kids, and even grown-ups too!
How Do I Know If My Baby Is Ready For Trail Mix?
We created this snack mix with older babies and young toddlers in mind, which is why all of the ingredients “melt in your mouth” and are easy to eat. We avoided whole nuts, pretzels, raisins, and other common trail mix ingredients that would be hard for toddlers to chew.
Every baby is different, so you will be the best judge of whether or not your child is ready for snack mix.
Generally, babies don’t start eating solid foods until about 6 months old. If your baby is just getting started with solids, you will to wait until they are proficient with chewing before trying this trail mix.
If your baby or toddler is already eating the components of this snack mix on their own, say, they like to snack on Cheerios, then they can likely enjoy this snack mix.
Always supervise your baby or young toddler when trying new foods for the first time.
Ingredients
For your convenience in making this recipe, I’ve added shop-able ad links where possible. Read our disclosure policy here.
- 2 cups Blueberry Cheerios — Or similar cereal
- 1 cup Mixed Berry Yogurt Melts — One (1oz) package of yogurt melts
- 1 cup Freeze Dried Blueberries — About half of a 2oz package of freeze dried blueberries
Instructions
- Add all of the ingredients to a large ziplock bag or medium bowl.
- Shake well to mix.
- Store in an airtight container or the zip-top bag that you used to make the trail mix.
Prep Tips
- Shaking the ingredients to vigorously can break the Cheerios into smaller crumbs. Instead of mixing in the bag, you can add the ingredients to a large bowl and stir to mix, then pour into a bag for storage.
- Try different flavors of Cheerios and freeze-dried berries to switch things up and create your own trail mix recipes! Strawberry trail mix is tasty too, made with Strawberry Cheerios and freeze-dried strawberries.
- Always make sure that your toddler is ready for finger foods before serving them trail mix. If the freeze dried blueberries seem too large (different brands may vary in the size berries they use), you can always cut them in half for safer snacking.
- Feel free to swap out the Blueberry Cheerios for your favorite cereals or even baby puffs.
- You can make more or less of this recipe easily, simply keep the ratios the same!
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Trail Mix A Healthy Snack?
Compared to store-bought kids snacks, I would consider this homemade toddler trail mix a better-for-you option than most!
Yes, there is sugar (some of it is fruit sugar from the blueberries); however, it’s less than store-bought trail mix that often contains candy. Plus, our homemade trail mix has much more nutritional value and is a good source of protein, calcium, fiber, healthy fats and Vitamin A.Â
Keep in mind that this is intended to be a snack and enjoyed in moderation. But as far as snacks go, it’s definitely better than chips!
How Long Does Homemade Trail Mix Stay Good?
When kept in an airtight container at room temperature, your homemade trail mix should stay fresh for up to a week. I keep ours in the pantry. If you live in a humid area, the shelf life of the snack mix may be slightly shorter. I notice that in the summer in Texas, yogurt melts start to get soft around 3-5 days. In that case, I’d recommend making small batches.
