Donut Grilled Cheese Sandwich

We made a grilled cheese sandwich…using donuts as the bread!

If you are looking for the ultimate mix of sweet and savory to satisfy those splurge day cravings, then this Donut Grilled Cheese is IT. A sweet glazed donut smothered in melty cheese…it is one of those things that makes you close your eyes when you eat it…it isย that good!
Even better, this recipe is incredibly easy! The base recipe is only 2 ingredients, though you can customize with add-ins to amp up the experience.

- Glazed Donuts
- Provolone Cheese
Kitchen Tools Used
- Square Griddle Pan (we have two of these at home and use them every day!)
Directions
To prep, slice your donuts in half. You will need one donut (two halves) for each sandwich.
While you slice the donuts, place a skillet or flat griddle pan on the stovetop over medium heat.
Layer your sandwich with at least one slice of cheese. You can use two slices if you like it extra cheesy!
When building the sandwich, flip the donut halves so that the inside of the donut (where you sliced it) is now the top and bottom of the sandwich. This will make it easier to grill, and the glazed coating will stay inside the sandwich…not on the pan.
When your pan is hot, mist with non-stick cooking spray or coat with butter.
Place the sandwich on your prepared pan and cook until the bottom begins to caramelize, or about 2 minutes. Carefully flip and cook the top surface of the sandwich the same way.
Remove from pan and serve warm.
Tip: For some delicious variations, try this donut grilled cheese with red chile flakes, bacon, or peanut butter! The possibilities are endless!
Frequently Asked Questions
Can You Use a Different Type of Cheese?
Sure! I love provolone because of its mild, salty flavor, which perfectly complements the sweet glazed donut. However, you can use any cheese that you prefer.
You can also use blocks of cheese, rather than thin slices, if that is what you have on hand. The melting time might vary just a bit, depending on the consistency of the cheese used.
Can This Sandwich Be Reheated?
Of course, just like a regular grilled cheese, you can save any leftovers and reheat later. Keep leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge. To reheat, place on your griddle pan and warm until the cheese begins to melt.
Keep in mind that a reheated sandwich is never quite as perfect as when it is freshly made. However, this is a SUPER easy recipe, so you can make a new fresh sandwich any time!
