A fragrant and flavorful blend of sesame seeds, onion, and garlic, this homemade Everything Bagel Seasoning recipe tastes just like the Trader Joe’s favorite!
Homemade Everything Bagel Seasoning
If you love the flavor of freshly baked bagel, you’re going to love Everything Bagel Seasoning! However, since you’ve landed here on a recipe to make your own everything bagel seasoning at home, I suspect that you’re already in the know! This salty and savory bagel topping is wildly popular for a reason!
In high school, there was a bagel shop a few blocks away from our school. About once a week, I’d hitch a ride with a friend to grab a treat for lunch. There’s something about a warm bagel fresh out of the oven, that snappy crust, fluffy center…mmmm…
Everything Bagel seasoning is a subtle, fragrant blend of spices and sesame seeds that perfectly captures that fresh baked bagel flavor. And it tastes fantastic on lots of foods, not just bagels!
Who Invented Everything Bagel Seasoning?
While Trader Joe’s made this unique seasoning blend famous, credit actually belongs to someone else. As the legend goes, a young man named David Gussen worked at a Queens bagel shop around 1980. As he was sweeping up crumbs from the oven, he had the idea to put those flavorful crumbs to use as a bagel topping. He dubbed his creation the “everything” bagel and the rest is history!

Helpful Kitchen Tools
- Small Mixing Bowl
- Whisk
- Small Mason Jars with Lids (either half pint or pint would work well)
Instructions
- Combine all ingredients in a small bowl and whisk together.
- Store in an airtight container, such as a mason jar.
Prep Tips
- Instead of using a mixing bowl, you could instead add all of the ingredients to a pint sized mason jar and shake well to mix. You want to make sure there is plenty of extra room in the jar for the seasonings and spices to evenly distribute.
- This recipe yields one cup, but if you double the recipe, it will be enough to perfectly fill a pint jar.
- While you could make a bigger batch, I don’t recommend making more than a pint at a time because spices don’t stay fresh indefinitely. Plus, it’s so easy to whip up a batch that you can easily do so when you run out or want a fresh jar.
Frequently Asked Questions
What Can You Use Everything Bagel Seasoning For?
Think outside the bagel!
Of course Everything Bagel Seasoning is the perfect topping for bagels that served as its flavor inspiration. But you can use it for so much more!
- Stir it into scrambled eggs or omelettes for a flavorful breakfast.
- Sprinkle on steaks or chicken for a crunchy coating that goes way beyond the usual salt and pepper.
- Coat the edges of sushi-grade tuna for a fun spin on peppercorn tuna.
- Shake on top of popcorn for a gourmet movie night snack.
- Use it to season your hamburgers before grilling.
- Swap out the regular salt on your French fries.
How Long Do Homemade Seasonings Last?
While your homemade seasoning won’t “go bad” so to speak, it will eventually lose some of its potency. The best way to extend the shelf life of homemade seasoning blends is to keep them in a tightly sealed airtight container.
After about 3-6 months, seasoning blends may begin to lose a bit of their freshness. Be sure to label and date your jars so you know when each batch was made. Before using, open the lid and give the seasoning a good sniff — if it doesn’t smell like anything, it’s time to make a new batch!
