Homemade Apple Pie Spice

As much as fall might be “pumpkin spice season,” it’s also the season of other fall flavors like apple pie! Nothing says fall quite like the smell of a fresh-baked pie coming out of the oven!

This amazing apple pie seasoning is better than anything you could buy in a store, and probably cheaper too! Store-bought spice blends can be pretty pricey, but are often made with common ingredients. So why not make your own apple pie spice mix?

What Can You Use Apple Spice For?

Apple pie spice is useful for SO much more than apple pie! Of course, it makes an easy addition to baked goods, but you can also it where you’d normally use cinnamon. I think of it like “cinnamon plus!”

Apple pie seasoning makes a great addition to:

  • Oatmeal
  • Pancakes
  • Applesauce
  • French Toast
  • Sweet Potatoes
  • Cakes
  • Waffles
  • Baked apple crisps

Ingredients

What is in Apple Pie Spice? – Many store-bought blends contain a combination of the three ground spices: cinnamon, nutmeg, and all-spice. Our homemade spice blend has a couple bonus ingredients for a richer flavor. However, all are common spices!

(Hint: You only need 6 simple pantry ingredients!)

Here are the six single spices we used in our blend of spices:

  • Ground cinnamon
  • Ground nutmeg
  • Ground ginger
  • Ground cloves
  • Ground allspice
  • Ground mace

TIP: If you have bulk spices, you can make a larger batch of this recipe! This is extra thrifty and will ensure you have plenty for all of your fall recipes!

Instructions

Making you own mix is super easy! You’ll be amazed you never thought to do it sooner, and probably won’t want to go back to pre-made mixes once you do!

All you do is add the ingredients to a small bowl and whisk together until well combined.

How Do You Store Homemade Apple Pie Spice?

Individual spices last for years when properly stored — and so can your homemade apple pie spice mix! An airtight container or spice jar is perfect for the job.

Keep your own spice mix away from heat sources and moisture to ensure that it stays fresh as long as possible. The pantry is ideal (not a spice rack next to your stove).

What is Mace Spice?

Mace is derived from the outer coating of nutmeg seed. What you’d normally think of as “nutmeg” spice is made from the ground seed, whereas mace is made from the ground up seed covering.

If you don’t have mace at home, you can simply use nutmeg instead — two teaspoons of nutmeg total. Or you can omit the mace altogether.

What Can I Use Instead of Cloves?

Cloves seem to be one of those love-it-or-hate-it spices (my husband is not a huge fan). If you don’t have ground cloves in your pantry or don’t care for the flavor, you can swap with 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cardamom instead.
