Copycat Chick-Fil-A Sauce

I’ve loved Chick-Fil-A since I was a kid. Back then I always asked for extra helpings of their honey mustard. But then I discovered Chick-Fil-A Sauce.

OMG.

I had no idea what I’d been missing all those years!! Now it is my go-to sauce for just about everything…even when we’re eating at home!

And now you can make it at home…in 5 minutes…with just 6 simple pantry ingredients!

What Does Chick-Fil-A Sauce Taste Like?

Chick-Fil-A sauce is a genius invention with just the right blend of sweetness and a hint of tangy flavor.

The best way I can describe Chick-Fil-A Sauce is that it tastes like honey mustard…but with a kick! Because it is mixed with barbecue sauce, Chick-Fil-A sauce has a flavor that’s all it’s own. It is creamy, sweet, and tangy — and absolutely delicious!

Chick Fil-A Sauce is my dipping sauce of choice for those tasty little chicken nuggets (try our copycat Chick-Fil-A nuggets recipe here!) I also love it with waffle fries (especially the end fries..am I right?!) and topping a fried chicken sandwich. Honestly, it tastes great on anything!

My kids love this recipe too! Chicken tenders are one of their most requested dinners, and this is their choice of dipping sauce. Like mama, like daughters!

What is Chick-Fil-A Sauce Made of?

You might be wondering, why make this at home when you can get it at the store??

Well, the packaging for Chick-Fil-A sauce has a lengthy ingredient list:

Soybean oil, sugar, barbecue sauce [tomato paste, corn syrup, vinegar, natural hickory smoke flavor, caramel color, spices, garlic, onion, natural flavor, oleoresin, paprika], water, mustard [distilled vinegar, water, mustard seed, salt, turmeric, paprika, spice, garlic], distilled vinegar, egg yolk, salt, cider vinegar, lemon juice concentrate, mustard flour, xanthan gum, natural flavor, garlic, and calcium disodium EDTA.

That’s a lot of extra stuff!

However, this is a surprisingly easy sauce to re-create at home!

Our copycat recipe contains just 6 basic ingredients!

  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 1/4 heaping cup BBQ sauce
  • 1 Tablespoon yellow mustard
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 2 TB lemon juice
  • 1/8 tsp paprika

All of these are real food ingredients, and depending on which barbecue sauce you choose, this can be a much healthier sauce when homemade!

Frequently Asked Questions

How Many Servings Does This Recipe Make?

This recipe as written makes about 8 servings, based on a serving size of 2 Tablespoons. Because this is a homemade sauce and doesn’t last as long as packaged sauces (more on that below), we generally make small batches, as needed.

However, if you’re feeding a crowd (say nuggets for a party) then this is an easy recipe to scale up. Simple double or triple the amounts and use a bigger mixing bowl.

How Long Do Mayo Based Sauces Last?

Up to a week. Because it does not contain added preservatives, your homemade dipping sauce will not have as long a shelf life as store-bought sauces. However, it should last about 5-7 days in the refrigerator. Because it is made with mayonnaise, this sauce should always be refrigerated.

Can You Use Dijon Mustard?

If you don’t have yellow mustard at home, you can use dijon mustard instead. Keep in mind that it will give the sauce a little bit of a different flavor, as dijon mustard is pretty distinctive. But we are only using a small amount.

I actually don’t like yellow mustard on its own, but I use it in this recipe because it is the perfect flavor!

We used 1/8 honey and 1/8 brown sugar in place of the 1/4 honey as the honey flavor dominated.
My boys couldn’t tell them apart.
    Thank you very much TSM.

Tastes exactly like it. I didn’t have lemon juice so I left it out and i still don’t taste the different between the cfa sauce and this. Very very quick and easy recipe. 10/10!

So glad you liked it! Thanks for letting me know and also letting me know that it still tastes on point without the lemon juice!
