Jalapeño Margarita
Liven up any fiesta with these Jalapeño Margaritas — a spicy twist on the classic margarita, featuring tequila, orange liqueur, fresh lime juice and spicy jalapeño slices.
Spicy Margarita
Before kids, my husband and I used to go skiing every year in Taos, New Mexico. We had a favorite hotel and a favorite bartender and the first drink he made for me was a spicy margarita.
If you love margaritas and you love spicy food, then this is the drink for you! It is a classic margarita recipe…with a kick from the jalapeño peppers!
The balance of sweet and spicy makes this drink a summer favorite — it’s actually quite refreshing! And the addition of the jalapeños keeps it from being too sweet. It’s just the right mix!
Try this new twist on the famous margarita. Those awho love a spicy kick will love all the timeless flavors of a margarita but with a little pinch of spicy in every sip. The blend of sweet and sour combined with the heat from jalapenos makes this an amazing cocktail recipe.
Fresh cantina flavors at home, this Spicy Margarita is easy and refreshing!

Instructions
The first thing we do is to prepare our glasses. The chili lime seasoning on the rim of the glass gives this drink an exciting complexity of flavor!
To get the seasoning to stick to the glass, I use two small plates or saucers. In one dish, pour simple syrup or agave syrup. In the other dish, I add a layer of the seasoning Dip the rim of the glass first in the syrup, and then gently roll the rim of the glass in the seasoning until coated.

To Make the Spicy Margaritas:
Cut peppers into slices about 1/4″ thick (or less) and place 3-4 jalapeño slices in each glass, along with ice.
TIP: Always wear gloves when working with peppers and wash hands thoroughly afterwards. The oil from the peppers can irritate skin.
Add tequila, triple sec and lime juice to a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake vigorously for a few seconds.
Strain and pour into your prepared glass. Garnish with a lime wedge.
Prep Tips
- If you prefer a sweeter drink, try adding a teaspoon of agave syrup to the cocktail shaker while mixing.
- Don’t have chili lime seasoning on hand? You can always use regular salt, kosher salt, or sea salt for the rim of the glass (or nothing at all!)
- If you love cilantro, it tastes fabulous in a spicy marg! Simply add a pinch of fresh cilantro leaves to the bottom of your cocktail shaker, muddle with lime juice, and then add the rest of the ingredients.
Frequently Asked Questions
How Do You Make the Jalapeños Less Spicy?
Much of the heat in a jalapeño pepper comes from the seeds. So you can remove the seeds and you’ll keep a lot of the flavor, but not the spiciness.
Another trick my husband uses to take some of the heat out of jalapeños is to soak them in water. After you cut the peppers into slices, soak them in a bowl of water for at least 30 minutes.
Can You Use a Different Type of Pepper?
Sure! I love jalapeños because they are spicy, but not overwhelmingly so. I used to be able to eat very spicy foods, but for some reason my tolerance lessened a bit after having two babies.
If you want to make this an extra spicy margarita, you might try serrano peppers, which are similar in flavor to jalapeños, but hotter. If you want a less spicy drink, try the tips above!
What is the Best Tequila?
The great things about margaritas is that you can really use almost any tequila you like! Gold tequila is just fine, since you’ll be mixing with lime juice anyway, so it only adds to the color of the drink. Silver tequila (or tequila blanco) works well too!
I wouldn’t recommend going with the cheapest, because in a sense you get what you pay for. However, you don’t need to use the most expensive tequila either, since you will be mixing it. Your favorite good quality tequila is perfect for this recipe.
