Butterbeer Latte

Coffee-loving Harry Potter fans rejoice! This is a faithful recreation of the famous butterbeer from the Harry Potter universe, but with a kick of espresso.

Even wizards need a morning fix sometimes! This deliciously creamy coffee drink will transport your taste buds to Hogwarts with every sip!

What Does Butterbeer Taste Like?

Of course, as a drink the found it’s start in an imaginary world, the “real” recipe is up for interpretation. Some homemade butter beer recipes call for butterscotch flavoring, some are toffee-based. Two things are for certain: this is a sweet drink and it is not real beer!

Our recipe is based on the Butterbeer Latte on the Starbucks Secret Menu. The Starbucks Butterbeer Latte is a grande latte with 2 pumps of toffee nut syrup and 2 pumps of caramel syrup. You can order the special drink as an iced latte or hot, but since fall is on the way, we tried it as a hot latte with frothy steamed milk. What a treat!

Helpful Kitchen Tools

Two Butterbeer Lattes surrounded by ingredients to make them

Instructions

  1. Drizzle the caramel sauce down the sides of your favorite mug or heat-safe mason jar (like we used).
  2. Pour in the prepared espresso or coffee. The amount is up to you, but I would suggest 2-3 shots of espresso or 1 cup of brewed coffee.
  3. Add caramel syrup and toffee nut syrup to taste, then stir to mix.
  4. Top with steamed milk and milk foam.

Prep Tips

  • Make your beverage extra special by adding toppings such as whipped cream, extra caramel drizzle, toffee chips or caramel bits.
  • If you cannot find toffee nut syrup at the store or don’t have any on hand, you can make your own! Toast 1/2 cup of pecans and then add to a saucepan with 1 cup of brown sugar and 1 cup of water over medium heat. Bring to a simmer, then reduce to medium-low and reduce liquid by half. Store in a cool place.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Butterbeer Contain Alcohol?

Nope! Despite the name, butter beer is actually a sweet drink and completely non-alcoholic. Because it contains coffee, I wouldn’t consider this a kids’ drink. However, if you wanted to make it for kids, you could use decaf coffee or skip the coffee altogether.

Can You Use Plant-Based Milk?

If you want to make this a dairy-free recipe, you can swap out the whole milk for your favorite plant-based milk. I would suggest using oat milk for the creamiest flavor and best foam. You can use almond milk, cashew milk, or coconut milk too — they just might not foam quite as easily.

Another thing to keep in mind is that caramel sauce often contains milk or dairy ingredients. So always check the labels if that is a concern.

Can You Make This a Cold Drink?

Want to make an iced butter beer latte? It’s easy too! Here’s the how-to:

  1. Prepare your coffee in advance and chill until it’s at least room temperature.
  2. Fill a glass with ice cubes and pour in the cold coffee.
  3. Stir in the caramel and toffee syrup.
  4. Top with cold milk.
