Orange Cinnamon Rolls – Baked in a Campfire or Grill

Campfire cinnamon rolls are a tasty treat that you can “bake” in the embers of a campfire or charcoal grill, by placing them inside and orange and wrapping in foil.

Who says you can’t have a fresh-baked breakfast when you’re camping??

A while back I saw a post on social media showing how to bake mini chocolate cakes inside an orange, using a campfire. I thought this idea would work well with cinnamon rolls too, so we decided to give it a try this weekend!

You could, of course, use homemade cinnamon roll dough, but it might be a little tricky to make yeast dough when you’re camping. So we started with a can of refrigerated cinnamon rolls to save time and ensure success with the dough.

In about the same time it would take to bake them in the oven, you can make fresh baked cinnamon rolls using a campfire or outdoor grill! Since they bake inside an orange, the cinnamon rolls absorb a delightful citrus flavor. What a treat!

What To Do With The Rest Of The Orange

Of course we didn’t throw away the delicious juicy orange fruit that we scooped out of the rind!

My girls used it to make fresh-squeezed orange juice. They had so much fun putting the fruit into a strainer and mashing it to make juice.

You could also chop up the leftover orange to make fruit salad to serve alongside your cinnamon rolls for a breakfast.

Ingredients

  • 1 can of small refrigerated cinnamon rolls (8 count)
  • 8 fresh oranges

Supplies Used

For your convenience I’ve included shop-able ad links to some of the products used to make this recipe; disclosure policy available here.

Instructions

  1. Slice off the top 1/2 inch of each orange. Use a spoon to scrape between the orange flesh and rind, working around the whole orange, until you separate the fruit from the rind. Be sure to keep the rind in one piece so you have a bowl shape, and don’t throw away the tops of the oranges!
  2. Place one cinnamon roll inside each orange bowl.
  3. Set the top of the orange on top on the cinnamon roll-filled orange and wrap tightly in a sheet of aluminum foil.
  4. Place the foil covered oranges on the coals of a grill or campfire. You don’t want it to be flaming hot, but you do need some glowing embers to cook the cinnamon rolls. Bake them in the campfire or grill for about 20 minutes, using grill tongs to turn them about halfway through.

Prep Tips

  • Removing the Orange Flesh – Getting the flesh of the orange out of the rind can be a little tricky at first, but once you get the hang of it, you can get them all done pretty quickly! I tried using both a knife (I do NOT recommend this) and a spoon (this was the winner!) I used a small metal spoon and worked it in between the orange fruit and the rind. Then I wiggled it and slid it around the orange to loosen everything up so I could scoop the orange out in one piece. Then you can use the fruit to eat and it won’t be a mushy mess! A knife did not work as well, and if it slips it could be an accident waiting to happen.
  • Cooking Time – Because every campfire will produce different amounts of heat, your actual cooking time may vary. At the 15 minute mark, you may want to take one cinnamon roll off the coals and peek inside to check for doneness. If your fire isn’t very hot, you may need a little longer than 20 minutes to cook.
  • Frosting – The refrigerated cinnamon rolls we used came with a little container of frosting. I spread the frosting on top of the cinnamon rolls AFTER they were done baking. The warm cinnamon rolls melted the frosting so it created this yummy ooey-gooey treat! I don’t recommend adding the frosting before baking as it might make them too soft and not cook as well.
