Cinnamon Roll Microwave Mug Cake
A fluffy and buttery homemade cinnamon roll…ready in minutes in the microwave? You had me at cinnamon roll!!
Cinnamon rolls are one of my favorite desserts ever, but they are pretty tricky to make. Our family cinnamon roll recipe is made with a classic yeast dough and is kind of an all-day thing.

Y’all…it’s here…

With this easy recipe, you can make one cinnamon roll at a time, whenever the mood (or your sweet tooth) strikes! There’s no rolling out dough, waiting for it to rise, and then baking. But this is a really homemade cinnamon roll, with all the flavor and taste of the “real” thing!
All you have to do is mix, microwave, and frost! What a treat!

Instructions
To prep you’ll need the mug or ramekin for your cake, as well as a small bowl where you can mix up the cinnamon swirl. Then you’ll combine everything in the mug and cook it. Easy-peasy!
- Add cake ingredients to an 8oz ramekin or microwave-safe mug and whisk until there are no lumps remaining in the batter.
- To make the cinnamon swirl, stir together 1/2TB melted butter, 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon, and 1 1/2 TB brown sugar in a small bowl.
- Pour the cinnamon swirl mixture on top of the cake batter. Fold the cinnamon mixture into the cake with a butter knife, using a swirling motion.
- Microwave cake for 1 minute, or until the center of the cake is cooked through. If the center is still liquid, continue to heat in 15 second intervals until cooked through.
Frosting Directions
If you’d like to add frosting, here’s how we made a simple cream cheese icing:
- Add butter and cream cheese to a microwave safe bowl. Heat for 10 seconds, then stir in 4 Tablespoons of powdered sugar, until smooth and creamy. If needed, stir in more powdered sugar to thicken.
- You can frost the cooked cake by spooning on half of the frosting and spreading, or you can scoop the frosting into a decorating bag and creating a swirl pattern like what is pictured.
Prep Tips
- The frosting recipe above yields enough for two servings if you use the swirl frosting pattern shown in our photos. You can either save the extra frosting in the fridge for next time or make a second mug cake to share with a friend.
- If you love cinnamon (like I do) you can always sprinkle more on top of your mug cake after baking and frosting.
- We use coconut oil at home for a lot of our recipes because it is a healthy fat and easily accessible at the grocery store. Other options that you can use: vegetable oil, extra virgin olive oil, avocado oil.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can You Make This Recipe Gluten Free or Dairy Free?
Sure! This is an easy recipe to modify to meet your dietary needs or preferences.
To make this a gluten-free cinnamon roll mug cake: use all purpose gluten free flour instead of the regular flour in the ingredients list. The other ingredients are naturally gluten free, but you may want to check packaging to ensure they’re produced in a facility without cross-contamination, if that is a concern.
To make this recipe dairy free: use a plant based milk for the cake. Personally, I love oat milk, cashew milk, and almond milk. For the cinnamon swirl, use a vegan butter substitute. You can skip the cream cheese frosting, or make a simple glaze of powdered sugar and non-dairy milk.

Why Is My Mug Cake Chewy?
This mug cake should be light and fluffy and moist, not dry or chewy. If your mug cake is tough or chewy, it likely means that you accidentally overcooked it.
When cooking, I recommend microwaving for 1 minute to start, then checking your cake. If a toothpick inserted into the middle of the cake comes out clean, it’s done. If there’s still liquid in the center, microwave in 15 second intervals until done throughout.
Watching carefully and heating in short intervals will help ensure that your cake is cooked perfectly, and that the batter doesn’t overflow.
