Instructions

  1. Divide the refried beans evenly among four plastic tumblers.
  2. You can use store-bought guac or whip up your own homemade guacamole for the second layer. To make a simple guacamole, mash together avocados, lime juice, salt, and pepper in a small bowl, then scoop on top of the beans.
  3. In a small mixing bowl, mix the sour cream and cream cheese until no lumps remain. Scoop on top of the guacamole layer.
  4. Pour salsa on top of the guacamole. Top with shredded cheese, olives, and your favorite toppings.

Optional Garnish Ideas for the 7th Layer:

  • Diced roma tomatoes
  • Shredded lettuce
  • Pickled jalapeños
  • Chopped cilantro
  • Chives or green onions

Prep Tips

  • Many classic layered bean dip recipes call for taco seasoning to be mixed into the sour cream layer. You’re welcome to try this variation if you like, or skip if you like a less spicy dish. If using seasoning, a teaspoon should be good.
  • If topping with lettuce or fresh herbs, I recommend waiting until party time to add them, so they don’t dry out or wilt.
  • Refrigerate until ready to serve.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can You Make 7 Layer Dip a Day Ahead?

Yes! 7 layer bean dip is a great make-ahead recipe because it can be prepared up to a full day in advance. Once you’ve filled the cups, cover with plastic wrap and keep refrigerated.

If adding lettuce or fresh herbs like cilantro, I recommend waiting until you’re ready to serve to add those toppings so they don’t wilt.

Because this recipe contains dairy, it should not be kept out at room temperature for more than 2 hours. Keep refrigerated until party time.

Can I Substitute Ingredients?

Absolutely! One of the reasons I love this recipe is that it can easily be customized. Chunky salsa or pico de gallo? Your choice! Cheddar cheese or a Mexican blend cheese? Your pick…or use both!

You can even make this dairy free by using your favorite non-dairy cheese products. Skip the olives if you don’t like them. Add your favorite fresh herbs, diced onions, lettuce…have fun with it!
