Cottage Cheese Ice Cream – 3 Flavors

Cottage cheese ice cream is a healthier twist on the classic frozen treat, with more protein and fewer calories than regular ice cream. It’s also easy to make with just a few simple ingredients!

When I first heard of cottage cheese ice cream, I’ll admit I was a little bit skeptical. I don’t really love cottage cheese itself, so I was unsure how it would work in an ice cream recipe.

Y’all…I stand corrected!! Cottage cheese ice cream is legit!!

My husband and I took a couple days to experiment with different flavors and these were our three favorites:

  • Banana Pudding
  • Strawberry Cheesecake
  • Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip

They’re all made with 5 ingredients or less and they all taste amazing!! Even the kids loved them!

But what really surprised me is how CREAMY cottage cheese ice cream is – it is even more creamy and decadent than traditional ice cream. To me it kind of tastes like frozen cheesecake…but it’s better for you!

Is Cottage Cheese Ice Cream Healthier Than Traditional Ice Cream?

Short answer: yes!

Cottage cheese ice cream is much higher in protein than regular ice cream. It is also lower in calories and our recipes are sweetened naturally with honey or maple syrup. We also used real fruit and other natural ingredients wherever possible!

For comparison, here is our Strawberry Cheesecake Cottage Cheese Ice Cream Recipe compared to a big brand strawberry cheesecake ice cream:

Our Cottage Cheese Ice Cream:

  • Less than 200 calories per serving
  • 13 grams of protein per serving
  • 21 grams of sugar (from fruit and natural sweeteners like honey)

Regular Ice Cream:

  • 350 calories per serving
  • 5 grams protein per serving
  • 32 grams of sugar (most of that from added white cane sugar)

So while any ice cream is a treat, this cottage cheese ice cream has more than double the protein and way less calories and processed sugar than real ice cream!

Win-win…and yum-yum!!

Prep Tips

  • Sweetener – I used natural sweeteners for each of these recipes. I choose either honey or real maple syrup, depending on which flavor I thought would best compliment each recipe. Feel free to substitute with your own favorite sweetener and adjust the sweetness level to your own taste.
  • Cottage Cheese – I used full fat cottage cheese for this recipe because it will give a creamier texture to your dessert. Low fat dairy products are often diluted, so using them could affect the taste and texture of the ice cream.
  • Variations – You can easily switch up the flavors of any of these recipes by substituting your favorite toppings. For example, you can make a different cheesecake flavor by using different berries instead of the strawberries, such as raspberries or blueberries.
  • Storage Instructions – Keep the pan covered or use a freezer-safe airtight container for storage. For best results, I recommend enjoying within a week, though it may last longer in the freezer. When it starts to get ice crystals, that is a sign that the texture of the ice cream is starting to change. Fortunately, it is easy to whip up a fresh batch!
  • Serving – Once the ice cream is frozen solid, it takes a little while to thaw out. I found that letting it thaw in the fridge for a couple hours before I planned to eat it made it just the right texture for easy scooping.
