Dirty Frozen Dr. Pepper

Summer is officially here, even though it’s felt like summer for a few weeks already in Texas! With temps in the 100s, nothing sounds better than an icy slushy to cool off with when the weather is so steamy.

My husband has been obsessed with Dr. Pepper since I’ve known him. It’s a staple in Texas and he always keeps at least one case in the house!

This frozen Dr. Pepper cocktail is easy to make and uses that syrupy sweet soda that everyone loves around here. Spiced rum is the perfect boozy complement and we added a hint of cherry to smooth things out. This is the perfect sweet treat for grown-ups this summer!

Not to be confused with Sonic’s Dirty Dr. Pepper, which is a non-alcoholic drink made with Dr. Pepper soda, coconut syrup, and lime juice – our Dirty Dr. Pepper is a boozy beverage! However, it can easily be modified as a kid-friendly drink (more variations in the “prep tips” section).

What Does Dr. Pepper Taste Like?

The exact flavor profile or Dr. Pepper is a closely guarded secret, but it is said to contain a blend of 23 different flavors:

Cola, Cherry, Licorice, Amaretto, Blackberry, Apricot, Blackcurrant, Caramel, Clove, Ginger, Molasses, Lemon, Plum, Orange, Nutmeg, Cardamon, Allspice, Coriander, Juniper, Birch, and Prickly Ash. Whew!

If I had to describe Dr. Pepper, I’d say that the vanilla and dark fruit notes are what really stands out. There’s a hint of spice and earthiness. It’s such a complex drink and with every sip you taste something new!

This “dirty” Dr. Pepper has all of those yummy flavors from the favorite soda….but with a kick!

Instructions

  1. Add ingredients to a large blender.
  2. Start blending on low and watch for foam from the soda.
  3. Gradually increase speed until you have a slushy consistency.
  4. Pour into glasses and garnish with whipped cream and a cherry.

Prep Tips

  • Speed: When blending, you want to make sure to start on low speed and stay there until you’re sure that the carbonation has had a chance to fizz out a little bit so it doesn’t bubble up out of the blender. After that, you can gradually increase the blender speed until all of the ice is crunched up into a slushy consistency.
  • Consistency: If your frozen cocktail mixture is too thick, add a little more soda and blend. If the mixture is too runny, add more ice and blend. This is an easy recipe to adjust until you have just the right consistency.
  • Flavors: This base recipe can easily be switched up to make your own flavor of “dirty soda”, such as making a Dirty Diet Coke or a Dirty Pepsi. If using regular soda, I would omit the cherry liqueur, unless you want to make a yummy cherry coke cocktail! Substitute Sprite and omit the cherry liqueur to make a frozen cream soda cocktail. Root beer would also taste fantastic in place of the Dr. Pepper.
  • Variations: Serve with a scoop of vanilla ice cream to make a Dirty Dr Pepper float. Use Diet Dr Pepper instead of regular Dr Pepper to make a “light” version of the cocktail with less sugar.
  • Mocktail:ย For a non-alcoholic drink that the whole family can enjoy, omit the rum and cherry liqueur and add 1/4 cup of grenadine instead.
  • Spirits: I think that the spiced rum blends well with the flavors of Dr. Pepper. However, you can alternatively use vodka (vanilla vodka would taste especially rich and decadent!) or light rum to make your drink. If you like things really spicy, try swapping the rum with cinnamon whiskey, such as Fireball whiskey. Pretty much any type of basic liquor would work here, even bourbon!
