10 Minute Microwave Fried Rice

Rice is one of my favorite foods on the planet — I think I could eat rice every day! I definitely don’t like to let any food go to waste, but what to do with leftover rice? It never tastes quite as good the next day!

One of the most common ways to use up leftover rice is for fried rice, but traditional fried rice can take up to 45 minutes to make. It’s also not necessarily a beginner recipe, which is a must for someone like me who is not exactly a whiz in the kitchen!

So I decided to try making fried rice in my new Galanz microwave…

I wasn’t sure if it would work, but to my surprise with the Galanz sensor features this microwave fried rice turned out fantastic! It was soft and fluffy and full of flavor!

Best of all, it only takes about ten minutes!

Microwave Fried Rice Ingredients

  • White rice — Be sure to start with leftover rice, as opposed to freshly cooked rice.
  • Frozen peas — Starting with frozen peas will allow them to steam to the perfect texture, as opposed to using canned or fresh peas which may become soggy.
  • Carrots — We used fresh carrots and diced them into small pieces about the same size as the peas.
  • Soy sauce — We used regular, but you could use low sodium or coconut aminos as well.
  • Sesame oil — We like the flavor that sesame oil brings to the dish, but if you don’t have any on hand you can substitute with vegetable oil.
  • Ground ginger — You can also use fresh grated ginger if you have that handy.
  • Garlic powder — Again, feel free to substitute with fresh grated garlic here.
  • Sugar — You can use either white or brown sugar or even a sugar substitute if you prefer.
  • Egg — Make sure to scramble you egg before adding to the rice for cooking.

Kitchen Tools Used: Galanz ExpressWave 1.4 Microwave

The beauty of this dish is that you don’t need a lot of supplies, just a microwave and a microwave-safe bowl.

We’ve been loving our new Galanz ExpressWave 1.4 Microwave because it has features that make it easier and faster to meal prep and reheat leftovers. Intelligent Sensor Cooking and Sensor Reheat Programs detect when your food is ready and optimize cooking time and performance. This is one high-tech microwave, but at a value price that you’d expect when shopping at Walmart!

I especially love the Express Cooking Knob because you can set cook time and start cooking with a couple tiny movements. No more searching to find all the right buttons or trying to remember in what order you need to push them! Just turn, press, and go! (Yes, I really am excited about a microwave knob…it’s so cool!!)

Why do you use old rice for fried rice?

One reason is that it is a great way to use up leftover rice! More importantly, using day old (at least) rice creates the perfect texture for fried rice.

If you start with freshly cooked rice for this recipe, you’ll end up with rice that may be too sticky or soggy. Day old rice has a chance to dry out a bit, and steaming it in the microwave will help revive it so that you have the perfect fluffy consistency.

How to Make Fried Rice in the Microwave Oven

Move your leftover rice to a microwave safe bowl and add frozen peas and diced carrots.

Add soy sauce, sesame oil, seasonings, and sugar to bowl and give it a stir, just enough to mix things around a bit.

Make a small indentation or bowl in the middle of the rice and pour the scrambled egg into it.

Microwave for 5 minutes, covering with a microwave-safe lid. Leave the lid slightly cracked so some steam can escape during cooking.

Carefully remove the container from the microwave (you may need to use potholders, as the dish may have become hot while cooking). Stir everything together, re-cover, and allow to steam on counter for 1 minute.

Remove the lid, stir to fluff the rice, and garnish with green onions or your favorite toppings.

Enjoy!

Just want to make sure I understand correctly. When you say to be sure and scramble your egg before adding – you are talking about beating the raw egg. The egg is not cooked before adding it to the rice? I am also not a very good cook . . . when my mom says to scramble an egg – she is referring to how to cook it.

Hi Robin — yes, you would beat the raw egg (but not cook it). Hope this helps!
