Why We Cook Oven Baked Chicken Instead of Buying Rotisserie

Rotisserie chicken is one of those convenience foods that we used to pick up frequently at the grocery store to “save time.” However, even though it is still cheaper than eating out, you’re still paying a premium for pre-cooked chicken.

My husband was convinced he could do it just as well at home, and he did! I’m sharing so you too can make your own easy oven baked chicken, that tastes just like rotisserie!

A pre-made rotisserie chicken will set you back anywhere from $7-10, depending on the store and if there are any specials.

We bought a whole chicken for $5, so right off the bat you save up to 50%. Plus, the bird we got was almost twice as big as the little ones sitting under the heat lamps.

I was surprised when my husband showed just how easy it is to cook oven baked chicken.

Technically, it’s not a rotisserie chicken because it’s not spinning while it cooks, but the end result is just as tasty and the savings are massive!

Why we haven’t been doing this the entire time I don’t know!

We have two different ways to make rotisserie-style chicken:

  1. Oven baked chicken (instructions below)
  2. Cooking chicken in crockpot (click here for recipe)

What you need to make your own rotisserie chicken:

  • 1 whole chicken
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil
  • 1/4 cup Soy Sauce
  • Garlic powder
  • Onion powder
  • Powdered Ginger
  • Lemon Pepper Seasoning
  • 1 Lemon, halved
  • 1 Lime, halved

Preheat oven to 300°.

First, you’ll want to remove “insides” from your chicken.

Once you’ve done so, place the chicken in a roast pan lined with foil or a silicon baking mat (these things are awesome and reusable!)

Using a knife, pierce chicken about 10 times or so, 1″ deep – this allows all of the flavors to penetrate the meat.

Coat entire surface of chicken with oil (about 1/4 cup).

Apply liberally garlic powder, onion powder, powdered ginger, lemon pepper seasoning, and soy sauce.

TIP: It’s not an exact amount and you can add as much or as little seasoning as you like; we probably used about a tablespoon of each.

Spread and massage spices into the chicken until the entire surface is coated:

Squeeze juice from a lemon and lime all over the chicken, then place the fruits inside the bird while it cooks.

Lastly, add your favorite chopped vegetables to the baking pan with chicken. Bake at 300°F for 4 hours.

The beautiful part is that this baking a whole chicken in the oven provides enough meat for 2-3 meals!

We used this one oven baked chicken 3 different ways:

  1. As a main dish with the vegetables that cooked alongside it
  2. On my favorite gluten free and dairy free pizza (BBQ Chicken Pizza with Sweet Potato Crust)
  3. Dill & Asparagus Chicken Salad for lunch.

Three meals? You sure you aren’t roasting a turkey? Maybe if your raising toddlers, try feeding teenage boys.

You’re right, teenage boys might be able to do work on a chicken 🙂 But it’s still an awesome deal to feed your entire family even one meal for less than $10 (that’s including the potatoes, onions, and carrots we roasted at the same time). Usually we incorporate the chicken into a larger meal to make it last longer, i.e. chicken salad sandwiches with baked sweet potatoes fries.
