Candy Sushi
Kids will love this candy sushi recipe! Made with gummy candy and rice krispie treats, it tastes as yummy as it looks!
Candy Sushi โ 3 Ways
Sushi is my favorite food…I think I could eat sushi every day and not get tired of it!
My kids are starting to get a taste for sushi too. While they aren’t big on raw fish yet, they do enjoy the crab (both real and imitation crab), California rolls, and Masago (flying fish eggs).
This recipe is a fun one for my fellow sushi lovers, but you can also enjoy it even if you don’t like real sushi! Because this sushi is made from CANDY!
Yep, you read that right…candy sushi!!
We’ll show you how to make candy sushi three ways: nigiri style (one slice of fish over a ball of rice), maki rolls, and a super simple sushi bite that kids can easily make themselves.
This dessert sushi recipe is such a cool dish to make for parties! Both grown ups and kids alike are going to love it! It’s a recipe that is so much fun to make…and eat!
Here’s how to make a cute candy sushi platter with three different types of treats!
Ingredients
The cool thing about this recipe is that you can adjust as needed to make use of candy you have at home. Below are some suggestions, but feel free to try your own ideas too!
- Rice Krispie Treats (you can use either store-bought or homemade)
- Swedish fish or similar gummy fish candy (gummy sharks could also work)
- Tootsie rolls
- Different flavors of licorice strings, Twizzlers, etc.
- Fruit Roll Ups, or similar chewy fruit snack sheets
- Sprinkles or mini chocolate balls
Instructions
There are two sets of directions: one to make Nigiri (one piece of fish on top of a ball of rice) and another set of directions to make Maki (sushi rolls).
To Make Candy Nigiri Sushi
Form rice krispie treats into golf ball-sized portions, then use your hands to form the marshmallow treats into a more oblong shape.
Place a gummy fish on top of the rice.
Take one small Tootsie Roll and stretch/flatten so that it is a strip that lays on top of the candy fish and wraps around the sides of the rice, like a belt.
To Make Candy Sushi Rolls (Maki
Remove the plastic backing from a sheet of Fruit Roll Ups candy and lay flat on a clean countertop or cutting board. Roll out marshmallow treats on top of the Fruit Roll Up, starting at the center of each sheet, until the marshmallow filling is just about 1/2 inch thickness or less.
Place 2-3 pieces of licorice rope or Twizzlers candy at one edge of the sheet of marshmallow treats.
Carefully roll up the marshmallow treats around the licorice, just like you would a real sushi roll, with the Fruit Roll Up on the outside. As you roll the candy sushi, gently squeeze/compress to keep everything together.
Chill in the fridge for 30 minutes before cutting into slices. A sharp knife works best here, so adults should handle this step.
Easy Kid-Made Candy Sushi
The third way to make candy sushi is really, really easy and kids can do this one themselves!
Shape the crispy treats into little circles or squares that are flat on top. Cookie cutters work well or you can freehand it.
Decorate each sushi bite with colorful sprinkles or different candies as a finishing touch on top of the rice mixture. Have fun with it!
Frequently Asked Questions
Can You Use Store-Bought Rice Krispie Treats?
Sure!ย You’re welcome to use store-bought Rice Krispie Treats to make this recipe and save time. However, you can also use homemade treats.
This recipe is adapted from our LEGO Rice Krispie Treats recipe. It uses the same ingredient amounts, but you’ll be shaping the marshmallow treats differently, without using a pan.
You’ll Need:
- 6 cups Rice Krispies or similar rice cereals
- 10 ounces mini marshmallows
- 3 Tablespoons butter
Melt butter in a medium saucepan. When melted, stir in marshmallows until melted and smooth. Remove from heat and fold rice krispies cereal into the marshmallow mixture.
When the marshmallow cereal mixture is cool, you can use it to make the candy sushi.
Does Candy Sushi Need to be Refrigerated?
Since this is simply a combination of marshmallow treats and gummy candy, refrigeration is not required. However, chilling the candy temporarily can help it keep its shape.
Store any leftover candy sushi at room temperature in an airtight container.
