Prep Tips
- Pudding Flavors: You can easily switch up the flavor of this dessert by using a different flavor of instant pudding mix! Try chocolate for a delicious combination of chocolate and vanilla, like a tuxedo cake! Try cheesecake flavored pudding for a no bake strawberry cheesecake dessert.
- Fruits: You don’t have to stick with strawberries! Fold in banana slices for a strawberry banana cake. This is also a great dessert to use any fresh fruit that is in season, such as blueberries or raspberry. However, you could alternatively use canned fruit, like pineapples or peaches. You could even use cherry pie filling for the fruit layer and top with maraschino cherries!
- More Ideas: Try using different types of Twinkies (like our homemade chocolate Twinkies) or snack cakes for the bottom layer. Customize your cake with sprinkles for different occasions. There are so many possibilities to make this recipe special!
Frequently Asked Questions
Can You Make Twinkie Cake Ahead Of Time?
Not only is this a super simple recipe with just a few minutes of prep time, but you can also make it up to a day in advance and keep refrigerated until you’re ready to serve.
Any leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator in an airtight container for up to 2-3 days. After that the Twinkies may start to get a little bit soggy.
Can You Use Whipped Cream Instead Of Cool Whip?
It’s hard to beat the flavor of fresh whipped cream, however, for this recipe I recommend using whipped topping. Whipped topping contains stabilizers, so it holds its shape longer than whipped cream. Stabilizers are substances that help to prevent the fat and water in whipped cream from separating.
In addition to stabilizers, whipped topping also often contains sugar and/or corn syrup. Not only do they add sweetness, but these sugars help prevent the whipped topping from melting.
By contrast, real dairy whipped cream will eventually separate into a liquid layer and solid layer when the water and fats fall out of solution. This will happen especially quickly in warm weather, as the heat will start to melt the whipping cream.
For the best results, use whipped topping, such as Cool Whip and your Twinkie cake will stay in beautiful layers for up to a couple days!
