Homemade Watermelon Mint Lemonade

Watermelon and mint are a delicious summer combination, so it’s no wonder that Chick-fil-A used them to create one of their fabulous seasonal signature beverages. Watermelon Mint Lemonade makes its yearly appearance every spring — when I saw it on the menu recently it immediately reminded me of a recipe we made for the blog a loooonnnng time ago.

Our watermelon mint LIMEade is so similar I figured it would be easy to modify to make new versions. Turns out it is a spot-on copycat of Chick-fil-A’s watermelon mint lemonade. Y’all…this stuff is GOOD!!

This is not one of those disappointingly bland lemonades you get at the grocery store, with just little hints of watermelon. This is a full on flavor punch made with real fresh watermelon, tart lemon juice, and sweet mint. It’s incredibly refreshing and rehydrating! In fact, it’s actually a good source of Vitamins A and C and even has a little bit of calcium! So not only does it taste good, but it’s got good for you ingredients too!

All you need are 4 simple ingredients to make this delicious summer thirst-quencher!

I think I’ll have to try to make a copycat watermelon mint iced tea next!

Instructions

This is a very simple recipe, with two main parts. First you’ll make a mint simple syrup. Then you’ll use this syrup as the sweetener for your homemade watermelon lemonade. The actual recipe steps only take a few minutes of prep time and cook time, but you’ll need to allow at least 30 minutes for the simple syrup to cool before using it. Give yourself about 1 hour total time. The good thing is that it makes a big batch that you can keep in the fridge for a few day and enjoy whenever you like!

First, make the mint simple syrup:

  1. Combine 2 cups water, 1 cup sugar, and mint leaves in a medium saucepan and bring to a boil.
  2. Reduce heat and stir until sugar has dissolved.
  3. Once sugar has completely dissolved, remove from heat and allow mint to steep for 1 hour.
  4. Strain to remove the mint leaves. Reserve the mint syrup.

Now, make the watermelon mint lemonade:

  1. Next, cut the watermelon into small pieces which can fit in a food processor. Discard the rind to your compost with the mint leaves.
  2. Puree all of the watermelon until it is a smoothie-like consistency.
  3. Strain into a pitcher to remove any seeds and pulp. (Depending on the size of the watermelon, this could take a couple batches).
  4. Add 2 cups lemon juice and the mint simple syrup to the pitcher of watermelon juice and stir well. Serve over ice.

Prep Tips

  • Garnish: This drink looks gorgeous with a wedge of fresh watermelon, a lemon wheel, or fresh mint leaves. Or all of the above!
  • Make it a cocktail: Stir in 1 cup of vodka or rum to the pitcher of the finished mint watermelon lemonade for a refreshing summer sipper…with a twist!
  • Turn it into a dessert: Blending with vanilla ice cream re-creates Chick-fil-A watermelon mint frosted lemonade. Use my copycat Chick-fil-A frosted lemonade recipe and simply swap out regular lemonade with your homemade lemonade from this recipe.
