Cupid’s Crunch Snack Mix

Valentine’s Day is coming up and I must admit that it’s one of my favorite occasions…because…candy!!

Even as a kid, I looked forward to Valentine’s Day because my dad would always get us a big red heart full of chocolates. I was always the first of us kids to finish my candy! What can I say, I definitely have a sweet tooth!

This recipe that I’m sharing today is essentially a candy-coated chex mix, created just for Valentine’s Day! We make lots of “puppy chow” recipes (as it’s often called) for other occasions too, like our Rudolph’s snack mix for Christmas.

I named this tasty treat “Cupid’s Crunch” because it just had such a catchy ring to it! And once you try a bite, you’ll see why Cupid loves this sweet snack mix so much!

First, we created a delicious creamy candy coating using white chocolate and colorful frosting. Then we coated crunchy Chex cereal in this coating and let it dry so that every bite is crispy, sweet, and crave-worthy. And finally, we added festive mix-ins such and Valentine chocolate M&Ms candies and conversation hearts. You’ve got to admit, this is such a cute treat! And it makes a great gift too…we packed ours in these lovely Valentine cookie tins!

But the best part about this recipe is that it is really easy to make! You only need a few minutes of prep time and mixing time, and then about an hour for the coating to dry. Easy-peasy and so worth it!

Instructions

To Prep:ย Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper or aย non-stick silicone baking mat.

  1. Combine pink frosting and 1/4 cup white chocolate chips (or white candy melts) in a microwave-safe bowl. Heat in 20 second intervals, stirring in between, until melted and smooth. If needed, you can add a teaspoon of shortening or coconut oil to soften the mixture.
  2. Fold 2 cups of Chex cereal into the bowl of melted pink chocolate mixture and stir until all cereal pieces are coated in the chocolate.
  3. Pour 1/2 cup confectionerโ€™s sugar into a large gallon zip-top bag, then scoop in the pink candy-coated cereal. Seal the bag and shake well until all of the cereal is coated with sugar.
  4. Open the bag and shake out the cereal onto your prepared baking sheet, then repeat the process with red frosting to make the same amount of red snack mix.

Prep Tips

  • Allow your Valentine’s Day puppy chow to air dry on the baking sheet for at least an hour, until completely dry.
  • Feel free to add any fun Valentine’s Day pink or red candies to your snack mix! We used Valentine’s M&M candies and conversation hearts. Sprinkles would also be fun!
  • We love these silicone baking matsย because you can wash and re-use them over and over again. Because they’re non-stick, you don’t need any non-stick spray – the snack mix just slides right off the mats!
  • As an alternative to the microwave, you can also melt the white chocolate in a double boiler over medium heat OR by making your own double-boiler with a saucepan of water and a metal bowl on top.

Frequently Asked Questions

How Do You Store Homemade Muddy Buddies?

Once the puppy chow snack mis is completely dry, scoop into a sealed airtight container and store at room temperature. A food storage container with a lid or a freezer ziplock bag would both work well. We used a cute Valentine’s Day candy tin!

While youย canย store your snack mix in the refrigerator, itโ€™s not necessary. When properly stored at room temperature, this snack mix will stay fresh for up to a week.

Can You Freeze Puppy Chow?

Yes, you can freeze your Valentine’s Day puppy chow for up to 3-6 months in a freezer bag. When you’re ready to enjoy it, pull the bag out of the freezer and allow the snack mix to thaw slowly to room temperature. Do not use the microwave or oven to reheat, as this could melt the candy coating.
