What is a Buttercream Board?
A Buttercream Board is a new food trend inspired by the ever-popular Charcuterie Board. Instead of meats, cheeses, and fruits, a buttercream board features buttercream frosting spread on a serving dish or piped into a fun design and surrounded by an array of sweet treats for dipping. These can include cookies, brownies, cake pieces, fruit, pretzels, marshmallows, and anything else that pairs well with sweetened frosting.

Instructions
To create this Easter buttercream board, there are three main steps:
- Make the buttercream frosting
- Pipe the frosting in the shape of a bunny face and ears
- Fill in the board with treats
More detailed directions for each step below!
To Make The Buttercream Frosting:
- In a medium bowl, beat confectioners’ sugar, butter and vanilla extract on high until light and fluffy (about 5 minutes).
- Separate the icing into 4 bowls. You’ll need about two tablespoons for black frosting, two tablespoons for white frosting, ¼ cup for pink frosting and then the rest will be for grey frosting.
- Color the frostings then place each color in its own tipless icing bag. Cut openings in the tips of the icing bags: about 1/2 an inch wide for the pink, grey and white frosting bag tips. Cut a very small opening in the tip of the black frosting bag. The black frosting will be used for fine details so make sure that this opening is very small.
To Create The Buttercream Board:
- On a large charcuterie board (pictured here is an 11.5” x 17.5” rectangle board), start by piping out (in grey) the bunny’s face and ears. You’ll want a large grey circle a little lower than the middle of the board then two grey outlined ears towards the top of the board. Fill in the circle with grey frosting but leave the ears just as outlines.
- Use the pink frosting to fill in the middle of the ears. Also pipe a pink nose in the middle of the bunny’s face.
- Use the white frosting to make two large eyes above the nose.
- Use the black frosting to add in pupils, whiskers and a smile. Then use the white to add two teeth and outline those teeth in the black frosting. Optional: pipe black glasses frames on the bunny’s face.
Now to Fill in the Board with Goodies for Dipping!
After you’ve created your buttercream bunny, you can fill in the board with your candies, cookies, etc. More ideas for this in the “prep tips” section below.
Prep Tips
- When filling in the board with the candies and other dipping items, start with the largest items first like the bowls of candy, then the largest cookies, mini donuts, etc. Then fill in any small gaps with extra little candies.
- Buttercream can stay out at room temperature for about 3 days but it should be wrapped well in food-safe plastic wrap. The best way to store these leftovers is to scoop the buttercream into a food-safe container. Then keep the candies and other sweets stored separately in food-safe containers at room temperature.
- We made our dessert board with sweet food items, but you could also incorporate savory items too for a fun contrast in flavors and textures. Nuts such as almonds or pistachios and crackers would make great additions. You could also add more things for dipping, such as chocolate hummus, jam, or honey.
Frequently Asked Questions
What cookies and sweets work best for dipping into the buttercream?
The best cookies and sweets for dipping into the buttercream are ones that are firm enough to not fall apart in the dip. Any sorts of cookies or brownies would work. For cake pieces, a regular cake probably isn’t firm enough (it would crumble on the board) but something firmer like a pound cake cut into small cubes would work well. Choose items that won’t dry out quickly once they are cut up and placed on the board.
What is the best way to display items on a dessert charcuterie board?
Always start with the biggest items first. For example, this board would be the buttercream bunny, then the bowls of candy, then the bigger cookies and lastly the little candies to fill in any gaps. Also be sure to alternate colors in the layout (for example, don’t put too many dark items beside each other like brownies and chocolate cookies).
