Instructions
First you’ll make a batch of homemade vanilla buttercream icing. Then you will pipe it onto your serving board and place the strawberries and blueberries. Finally, you’ll surround the frosting with lots of goodies for dipping!
To Make The Buttercream Frosting:
- Add the softened butter, salt, vanilla, milk, and about half of the powdered sugar to the bowl of a stand mixer. Mix on low until combined. (You can also use an electric hand mixer and a large bowl).
- Increase the mixer to medium speed, scraping the sides of the bowl as needed, and mix until the frosting is nice and fluffy. Add the rest of the powdered sugar and mix on low until well combined.
- If the frosting still seems dry and clumpy, add a splash of milk and mix until smooth. If the frosting seems to runny, add a bit more powdered sugar and mix.
- When the frosting is your desired consistency, transfer the frosting to a piping bag fitted with a large star tip.
To Make The Flag Buttercream Board:
- Print out and place the American Flag PDF pattern on a large serving board. Place a sheet of parchment paper on top of the pattern. under a piece of parchment paper. You could free-hand if you want, but we like to keep the lines straight to know which rows get the strawberries, etc.
- Following the pattern, pipe the frosting in rows on top of the parchment paper. Leave the blue corner of the flag empty for now.
- Start at the top of the flag and place your strawberry slices in a horizontal line, for the first red stripe. Leave the next line of frosting uncovered, for the first white stripe. Continue alternating with red and white stripes until you have 13 rows total. The first and last stripes should be red.
- Pipe the remaining corner of the flag and cover it entirely with blueberries.ย Refrigerate until ready to serve.
Prep Tips
- Drawing the Flag – While you can absolutely freehand when you’re piping the frosting, a pattern helps keep the lines/stripes straight. You can use our printable flag pattern here.
- Storage –ย The frosting can be made ahead of time and stored in an airtight container in the fridge, until ready to use. If preparing ahead of time, I’d recommend waiting to add the fruit until the day of the party, so none of the juices from the fruit seep into the frosting.
- Serve With –ย I like to add a variety of treat for dipping, both sweet and salty. Some ideas include: Oreos, pretzels, wafer cookies, sugar cookies, Nilla Wafers, chocolate squares, graham crackers, pretzels, and other types of fruit slices, such as apples.
