Honey Chipotle Chicken Wings

“Wings!!!!”

That’s the answer you’ll get 10 times out of 10 if you ask my hubby his favorite food. And even I have to admit that wings are a must at any respectable game day, super bowl party or tailgate.

This is my husband’s recipe for honey chipotle chicken wings. I’ve got to say that these wings rival any you’d find at a restaurant — they’re a crave-able blend of crispy and sticky-sweet on the outside and tender on the inside. Sweet and spicy is one of my favorite flavor combinations and this easy appetizer checks all the boxes!

The best part about this recipe is that it is super easy! My mom and I actually made this batch for my husband while he was at work. Trust me when I say that if I can make these wings and have them turn out amazing, then anyone can!

No need for grilling, no need for any special tools like a blender or even the stovetop! Just whip up the sauce, coat your wings, and bake! The end result is a batch of sticky-sweet wings that are cooked to perfection. You’d never guess that they aren’t grilled or fried!

Ingredients

  • 1-2 lbs chicken wings and/or drumettes
  • 1/2 cup honey
  • 1/2 cup buffalo wing sauce
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/8 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp chipotle powder

Helpful Kitchen Tools

  • Mixing Bowls
  • Cookie sheet or Baking sheet

Instructions

Prep Time: 10 Minutes

Total Time: 45 Minutes

To Prep:

  • Preheat oven to 400°F and coat a baking sheet or cookie pan with non-stick cooking spray or line with aluminum foil.
  • Pat wings dry with a paper towel to remove excess moisture before dipping in sauce. This will help the sauce stick better.

To Make the Wings:

  1. In a large bowl, whisk together 1/2 cup honey, 1/2 cup buffalo sauce, and 1 tsp garlic powder until well combined.
  2. Dip the dry chicken wings one-by-one in sauce until fully coated. Place on a foil-lined baking sheet so they are not touching each other.
  3. In a separate bowl, stir together salt and chipotle powder. Sprinkle a pinch of this mixture on each of the wings.
  4. Bake for 35-40 minutes on the middle rack of the oven, flipping wings halfway through.

Prep Tips

  • Oven temperatures and cooking times may vary, so watch wings closely at the end and remove from oven when they are the desired crispiness. This may be longer than our cooking time if you like your wings extra-crispy.
  • We whipped up an extra batch of honey chipotle sauce to pour over our cooked wings. Even if there is leftovers of the original sauce, you don’t want to re-use anything that you dipped the raw chicken in.
  • I love my wings thoroughly coated in sauce, as you can see from the photos. However, if you like them less saucy, you can use a basting brush to paint on a single layer of chipotle sauce.
  • These wings are saucy and delicious all on their own, but they do have a little bit of spice. You may want to serve them with a side of ranch or blue cheese dressing as a cooling accompaniment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can You Used Cooked Chicken?

Sure! If you want to start with pre-cooked chicken wings it is a great way to save time.

When doing so, I recommend mixing the sauce ingredients in a saucepan on the stovetop over medium heat or medium-high heat. Simmer, but do not boil. That way the sauce is warm when you pour over the chicken.

What Does Honey Chipotle Taste Like?

I would compare honey chipotle to a sweet and spicy barbecue sauce. Imagine if you combined honey barbecue and buffalo sauce and you’ve got an idea of what it tastes like! Sweet, spicy, tangy, and a little smokey — and just perfect for coating crispy wings!

Is This Recipe Spicy?

Yes, this sauce is a little bit spicy. We started with buffalo sauce as the base, but it is balanced out by the honey, so it is not too spicy in my opinion. Of course, everyone’s tastes are different!

If you like a less spicy sauce, you can add more honey or start with a mild buffalo sauce for your base.

If you like a very spicy sauce, try adding a 1/4 teaspoon of chili powder to your sauce. You could even use real chilis or chipotle peppers for a big kick of heat! If adding peppers, you may want to mix your sauce in a food processor. I also recommend adding just a little bit of pepper at a time and tasting as you go to make sure it isn’t TOO spicy!
